I have over 8500 and I haven't actively medalwhored since when the system was new. The last time I checked the leaderboard, when the maximum was about 10000 I was barely hanging into the top 50, falling quickly. A year of inactivity and the maximum is probably about 50000 - likely to be a lot more.

There's a thread in the Wi/Ht? that contained the user-tracked top 50 somewhere, by the time I post this someone's bound to have ninjad me though.
