Help Needed For Final Year Uni Proj 2009-12-15 09:11:00 Reply

Hello to all Newgrounds users,

My name is Ash and i am currently studying for a Computer Games Design degree at University. For my final year project i have negotiated with my tutors to create an animated flash comic, What does this have to do with game design you ask? well not much lol unfortunatly for me i am neither an artist nor programmer i am looking to get into design and project management. Coming up with concepts and stories for games which can then be created.

Now the problem i am facing is although i have a tight story and concept for my comic i am unable to create anything.... this is (im hoping where one or a few of you will come in)

I am looking for a flash artist who can help bring my story to life. =)

I have seen a huge amount of talented artists posting on this site and would hugely appreciate any help that can be offered by anyone.

It is quite a lengthy project aswell running in at a few months worth of work, so if you would like to know what its like to work on a live project maybe gain some extra experience please get in touch.

I am mainly looking for a artist and possible animation (and time permitting maybe some voice acting). I want the style of a webcomic so simple cartoony design with speech bubbles. Unfortunatly i cant post the entire story here but it i can tell you a little about it:
It is a comedy based in an alternate universe to ours, where the internet was never invented. However games consoles and gaming flourished in a more social sense, people got together to play games and the city that the characters inhabit is based around gaming. Now along comes an evil corporation which creates the first networked (online) game. Slowly but surely people start to become zombie like creatures staying at home playing the online game, not going out, being drawn to its eerie siren call. The hero of the comic decides enough is enough and goes to take down the corporations servers and restore humanity to those lost to the game.

At the moment the working title is 'Severe Server'. As i am a HUGE fan of comedy in all its elements im taking inspiration from things such as Spaced, Shaun of the Dead, GreenWing, Scrubs... I am also incorporating video game references as a subtle nod to all of my peers.

As i have said this is a serious project and im hoping i can find some help here at the biggest flash portal on the internet. If you are interested or know anyone who might be then please pass on this message.

You can contact me at akhan_29@hotmail.com
For more information. I totally understand it is currently the holidays and i am looking to start the work in the new year.

Hope to hear from you soon
Thanks in advance
Ash

I dont get it. Why would u negotiate to make a flash animation when u cant even do one, no art, no programming...? i just find that confusing, as it seems u hav placed all ur trust in the Newgrounds Community...? Anyways good luck. PS u might want to post how much ur willing to pay...

Sorry thats a bit of confusion, I have negotiated to create a design document and story element, the flash comic isn't needed for the project but it would allow me to gain experience for project management.

It's not soley on the newgrounds community, i have also advertised in my University and to a few other artists that i am in communication with.

I posted on newgrounds as i am aware that sometimes artists can get mental blocks, like most people in the creative industry, so this gives them something to practise their skills on.

As for knowledge, i have done small amounts of programming and i can doodle and story board. I have used flash before but to create something that looks decent i figured if i can get a proper artist on the project it will be a lot better than my stickmen walking around a plain white background lol.

As for pay unfortunatly im just a student, so i can't afford to pay. As i have said it is something for people to gain experience from, by all means if its not something that your interested in then thats fine, just putting it out there to see if there is any response.
Thanks for the reply

It might just be me, but I always tought a game designer was the equivalent to an architech or an ochestra leader in the way you lead a team with an expert knowledge of every element of your team, the architech knows everything from materials to electrical component and the orchestra leader knows and plays all or most of the instrument. How do you plan to lead a team when you do not know how they work, what are the possibilities and the limits? Anyway as game design goes, if you do not have artistic or coding skills, why did you not just create a non-digital game, either a board game, a remake of D&D, live action, cards and the list go on. A web comic does not give you any kind of experience in pacing your game, balancing rules and options or set up an interesting interaction between player/game and player/player. By the way I'm not flaming you I simply suggest you rethink your approach.
