AP redesign, please come soon. D:

Eh, the function doesn't really need a re-design. It's not a measure to see how good your music is, but rather to promote songs from those that were lucky enough to not get zero-bombed and to help them get some exposure.

Its a good thing that it at least has a minimum rating requirement for the songs it chooses - otherwise you might be subjected to some rather serious delirious biz-nasty. Hell, I think that the vast majority of the music on there tops the other 99.9% of recent submissions with relative ease, .

Your music or people's stuff that didn't get featured may be better in your opinion (and mine too, I checked out your songs and holy crap, 5* bonanza!), and yeah, the Dn'B and dubstep is mostly generic as all hell, but - as aforementioned like a million times - its all subjective and attributable to the "instant gratification" mindset. Take my opinion, for example, that most orchestral music on Newgrounds is just a dull copy of that generic epic vibe that so many people try to achieve nowadays. I'm sure most NG'ers out there would STRONGLY disagree with that!

Now, there is no freakin' way I'll ever see my name up there due to what genres I dabble in and the usual NG member's musical taste/perception + zero bombtards (and *possibly, just *maybe* the quality of my tunes themselves >8D), but you don't see me ranting on and on about how someone's song sucks. Well, thats also attributable to having screwed-up standards and having barely any musical education, but I hope you get my point.

No hate intended. And bluh bluh unnecessarily large response.

You call that unnecessarily large?

*Ehem*

I'll have to disagree with you that the music in the Top 5 is better than the majority of songs submitted throughout the week in question. Most of the time, they do have some quality in them, true, but we've had instances in the past where the Top 5 was just ridiculously bad (listen to #2 - #5 of the post I linked to), and I'm absolutely certain that there are much more deserving submissions than the average Top 5 song.

Being an audio moderator, I listen to a lot of the submissions posted on NG, and throughout one week of approving/banning new artists, I can really easily find 5 submissions which sound great and are deserving of being part of the weekly tops, yet if, after a few days of their approval, I look back on the underdogs who made these gems, they don't get any recognition even when they submit more songs once they get approved. And if I can find 5 submissions which deserve to be part of the Top 5 from submissions by unapproved Newgrounds artists, most of them being beginners who just started making music, then I'm sure it isn't hard to find Top 5-deserving submissions from artists who posted a handful of songs on NG.

I'm glad you like my music, and I've checked your songs and I really like them too. They're leagues better than most songs in the Top 5, but have you ever got a Top 5? No, because somehow songs that are worse than yours are making it to the Top 5. I'm not saying that the current Top 5 songs are bad, because they're not. I even enjoyed one or two of them. Still, my point is that there are more experienced artists who deserve the recognition more than these artists and yet they don't get it. I can mention names if you want.

Yes, you're right, the Top 5 is currently a measure on how lucky you are to get past the 0-bombs. But think about it - wouldn't it be nicer if the system got redesigned and the Top 5 became a measure of the best songs throughout the week, and not a measure of luck? I agree that the current system is not just influenced by 0-bombs, which is why you don't see many orchestral songs on the Top 5 - simply because orchestral isn't so popular - and a new fixed system won't guarantee more orchestral songs either, but at the least it will guarantee that the best songs of the week (in the eyes of the voters) get showcased in the weekly tops, and that's a good thing.

Look at the Flash Portal. Have you ever seen a flash which got a daily or weekly award which is not deserving of its award? 99% of the time, the flashes which get awards are good, and deserve their exposure, yet the Flash Portal's system is just as automated as the Audio Portal's system.

In fact, to prove that the system needs work, I'll tell you that once I did indeed get a Top 5, but it was on a submission which was posted under the 'Latin' genre (I won't link to it to avoid self-advertising). That genre is pretty obscure and unpopular, so in turn it didn't get 0-bombed much, and I landed second place. The thing is, it wasn't even one of my best submissions. Sure, people liked it, but I had simply better submissions which didn't get a Top 5. And I'm sure you and all other fair users of of the Audio Portal's system prefer a Top 5 which actually showcases deserving submissions, and not submissions which got there by luck.

So yes, the Audio Portal needs a redesign. The admins hinted that the new redesign will include a much better Audio Portal system, and all we can do is hope it comes soon.

Wait, songs worse than mine? How's that possible ?

But in all seriousness - yes, the portal could use a redesign if that's possible. Your convincing but INCREDIBLY LONG counterpoint made me realize that this was actually a project that had been planned for a while, not just some random suggestion (whoops!). I honestly thought that the NG dudes and dudettes were just going to leave the audio section untouched - my bad!

No. Just no. So incredibly boring and unnecessarily repetitive. Plus, "Defqon 1 samples used"? Sounds suspicious.

I wouldn't say it's great, but it's more interesting than the usual dance music that makes Top 5...

Sounds like SessileNomad. Other than that, it sounds like standard glitch. It's not very interesting melodically, and it doesn't really go anywhere.

Thanks, I will agree it is not my best stuff....why do you think using defqon samples is suspicious? They had a comp a few months back to make the new anthem and gave out the sample voice to use :)

Ah, okay. That makes sense then. There are a lot of tracks on the AP -- and quite a few that make Top 5 -- that use copyrighted material... I hear 'samples' and it makes me nervous :P

But if they released it under a free-to-use license, then that's fine.

BTW Invisible, you inspired me to create a 20 minute long track that switches over from ambient, to glitch, to techno ambient glitch STUFF. ;)

Sycophants, multiple accounts, competitive 0-bombing or just rigging the system. That's how anybody gets in the top 5.

Alriiiiight, review mode on:

1. Heavy stuff that I really can't listen to but is bound to be enjoyable for some. This does NOT deserve #1 of all times, though, despite ingenious sound design and mastering.

2. No. (OVERRATED!) BeefourMusic failed badly on this one. Industrial does not give you a liscense to make your mix sound like utterly generic shit, sorry.

3. Uplifting yet calm stuff. I am not a fan of the genre at all but this was interesting as it is meshed with ambient elements and not overly standard. Like it a bit.

4. WIN: SO MUCH BLOODY WIN. Despite a slightly generic feel, the styles mesh together so freakin' well that it feels like an actual orchestra. Well deserved top!

5. Oh god, ripped off, painful intro melody. Then the shitstep kicks in and makes me wonder where the fuck the originality went in the world. Overdosage of wubwub does exist and this only helps prove it. Producers and audiophiles would like, but not me, sorry.

Never a fan of madness music, kinda hurt after a while and y browser actually crashed while listening. The comp couldnt take it eitehr. FAIL.

#2

Beefourmusic is really starting to get on my nerves, that guitar sounds like me farting through my mouth and probably even a little worse. Therefore, FAIL.

#3
http://www.newgrounds.com/audio/listen/4 24191

Pretty good. Got that 90's trance vibes. A relaxed rather un-compressed mix, easy on the ears and calming. therefore, GOOD

#4

Had my full attention throught, very top 5 worthy. therefore, GREAT

#5

Loved the intro and mix in the intro, everything got rather squashed afterwards. Dubstep isnt about how many differnet bass synths you can crowd in your drop lol, therefore DECENT

really cool in places like the end but mostly just a mediocre song. Nice to see some style variation though. I'd never imagine an industrial song getting top5 considering the top scoring songs in the genre are usually below 4.10
