I was gonna say something along those lines too. Maybe get her a better video card etc.

judging that she is a female gamer, and not a lesbian, she'll probably need a bag for her face in public. i bet you could find a good, large, paper sack at wal-mart for $0.25. well within budget

Nothing says I love you like a new video card!
Unless she's incredibly unorthodox, she isn't going to want something practical like this. Even girls that like games don't really want a game from their boyfriend; it's probably better to get her something a bit more personal.

I'm female and I don't mind practical gifts. and you may be a female, I dunno, didn't check your profile, but I thought you were male.
I'm one of those "its the thought that counts" people anyway. If she's gonna get hung up over a gift then she's not worth his time.
I will say, as a chick, the whole "Just get her some shit with hearts on it" annoys the hell outta me.
I'd MUCH rather a fella put some thought into getting me something I like, that's relevant to my interests. Not whatever the media is marketing.
but w/e, thats my 2 cents and in today's economy, that's worth nothing.

i agree tenfold, that's why i'm so up-in-arms about getting her something. i've already bought her something sentimental, so i'm not quite sure what else would be a nice gift.
and yes i'm a guy ;_;

Fair enough. Practical was probably not the best choice of words. Of course the gift should be relevant to her interests, but I don't think just buying some game because she likes some genre necessarily shows enough thought. Someone mentioned getting something game-related, but not actually a game; that makes more sense to me. Whenever I buy a gift for a girl, I try to find something that they wouldn't buy for themselves, but they would still want it. Otherwise, it seems a bit too ordinary. After typing that, I feel really stupid. I think I've bought into an entirely superficial culture.
Regardless, $30 won't get you very far for a graphics card. If you're working with that kind of budget, better to buy her something for what she already has.

New Super Mario Bros. for the Wii.
It's extremely fun. Great for us Nostalgic types and "Newbs" too. Also, it's 4-man(woman) co-op so you and her can play at the same time... too bad it's 49.99
It is ok to make fun of America. But if you make fun of any other country in a vague or joking way you get banned.

No, not at all. You're right in that it needs to be something romantic or sentimental or of meaning too. I didn't mean to sound argumentative in my post. I agreed, I just also wanted to point out that I'm a chick and I dig things that are functional and practical. and then the girly things that TV wants men to buy us, we don't all want.

PC gamer? Wii? PS3?
PC: Fallout 3 is a definite if she loves FPS with a hint of RPG. Also CS:S is 75% off this weekend and i find it to be a great experience for the gaming couple. Check out Steam for other games. They have plenty.
Wii: No fucking clue mate. Your on your own.
PS3: Heard Wolfenstein was a
badass game.

I'd recommend Day of Defeat (SOURCE) over CSS, if only because it has respawns and doesn't work on a bases of you requiring a set amount of money to buy a weapon. But you spawn as a class instead (Sniper, Rifleman etc).
Its also £6 ALWAYS.

I'd suggest you get her Rock Band if you can afford it. I know it's not so cheap, but it's a game that never gets old and you can enjoy with her. My girlfriend loves it, and she is actually getting it for christmas.
Otherwise, i suggest a racing game( i've found my friends like those ) or like some have said before, the new super mario for wii, looks like a lot of fun.
Girls also seem to like games where you can personalize everything, maybe Fable II or the sims 3 are good options too.
Good luck!

Yeah, and if she really is a "gamer" just grab her a Yoshi or Zelda shirt. She'll dig it.

Counter Strike
I have to agree, both Half Life and Half Life 2 are horribley dated to modern shooters, and while the computer she will be using is dated as well, I would recommend against it.
May I also recommend Uplink as the best Indie game of the decade? Sure its single player only but it runs on a PC with a 6 year old graphics card perfectly, you should try it out. (Also £6)

just give her a t-shirt with Yoshi on
everyone loves Yoshi right?
but really, get her something that she would like. i don't think i would like to get a game as a gift from my boyfriend if i was a girl (strange sentence)
as i said before, make a papercraft for her or get her a necklace with a Heart Container on. the heart container sure is winning. it is a necklace, it got a heart shape, it's something she is intrested in. you should really get her that necklace, or an Ocarina =)
i thinking about making a something related to Final Fantasy for a girl because she just love the series.
already given away some rupees...
