3.80 / 5.00 4,200 ViewsI really love giving interesting gifts for the holidays, especially ones that I can take a part in. For this year I thought it would be awesome to give the gift of a board game, because really, everyone loves board games.
I wanted to hear some of your recommendations. I'm a big fan of Dungeons and Dragons, but I'm not looking for anything that complex. The ideal board game would be playable by 2 or more players, not have any little tiny beads or figurines that get lost under the couch, and to typically last under an hour, but if addictive enough I wont mind if it lasts longer than that. Fantasy themes are great.
If your favorite board game does not fit the requirements I listed, feel free to share it anyway.

Risk is just plain great. You're looking for a short board game? hmm... Does Jenga count?!
Chess, if they don't have it already.

Risk falls into that category of games with lots of pieces and way too much time. However, I think theres a decent LOTR Risk out there.
The Beatles Trivial Pursuit = Ultimate Win
Thanks aplenty to Phobotech for the great user icon.
Special Additions of Games work, everyone has clue, but not everyone has Talking Clue!!!!
but yeah, if not, Chess, if its a high quality chess set especially, I had a wood one hand carved from Germany, and ive had like 3 nice glass sets
[ oh and, shotglass poker too, had that ]

Scrabble is always good. It's simple but can get fiercely competitive.

Scrabble is cool, but as shallow as this may sound I don't want the too intensely "mentally stimulating" games. Same deal with chess, one of my favorite table top games, but most people either have it or just wont bother with it.
Any simple games that don't quite fit into the board games category are cool too, like Jenga is a pretty good recommendation so I may think about that one.

If there is I want it!
Sorry, but I can't think of anything right now.

You could always get a really nice deck of cards. You can get ones that are black and shiny and stuff.

That is a good idea since you can do so much with cards, but I guess I like the element of humor attached to a board game. Its just so wildly unexpected the only thing you can think is "Wow, are you serious?" with a smile, of course.
I'm dead serious.
no more tears, just an insane laugh
I'd say no to Monopoly. A serious game of that can go on for hours.
Cluedo or Clue is the best choice. Always interesting, not too long and different every time.
It has been said before, and though I have never played it, Risk sounds wonderful.

That statement is very true...most people love bored games with friends or family if its the right setting...

ummm WOW you really made it hard to suggest something.
But if Fantasy theme is your thing then go for Lord of the Rings Risk. Im not a fan of Lord of the Rings. But the whole moving ring adds a really odd twist to how you would normally play Risk and it comes chock full of Fantasy Via 4 books a old cartoon and 3 horridly long movies. Monopoly also come in Transformer and Star Wars edition. Stratego has way less pieces then monopoly or risk and is jsut as fun but if i member correctly its only for two.
Also theres a game i got on my Xbox froma download based on a board game ive never heard of but want to have now cause I really like it.
The Settlers of Catan
FOR THE FUCKING WIN
Chinese Checkers
For 2-6 players and be played multiple times in an hour and made into a drinking game
take a good hard look at the mutha****in boat.

I agree with this. For me, Monopoly has too much going on for it to be a casual game. And like you said, it can go on for hours. Eventually people just get bored out of their minds.
Why yes, that IS a large collection of 1998 "Smithy's Favourite Times" Licenced Cereal Pop Toys!
Star Wars Chess.
darth vader is the blac team's king, Obi Wan is white team's.
it delivers fun

Haha, sorry. Don't take them too seriously, when I say no small pieces for example, I mean no bag of 100 skittles pieces. Since I'm gifting this for my own friends, I'm sure they responsibly take care of the game.

Honestly, I would have totally gotten this for one friend in particular, but he already has it.

The Settlers of Catan
I looked it up and it looks like it could be interesting. I'm not a good judge of board games, since for example, monopoly seems like it would be so boring, managing money and just running in circles (er, squares) around the board, yet its the most popular board game in america.
Have any of you played the Hero Quest games, or some sort of dungeon crawler D&D esque games? Hero quest was a definite possibility but the damn thing is really rare now and way too expensive.
I combed over every post, and sorry if this is a repeat, but I didn't see it.
Cranium. This game is insanely addictive, however, in order to get the full effect, it's a group game for 6+ people. Apples to apples is a great party game too, and it's only cards.
And you sure as hell can't go wrong with SORRY. seriously. When's the last time you played it? Now that you're a little older, you'll realize how much strategy there actually is in the game of Sorry.
Probably my favorite board game of all time, though: Stratego, though that one's only 2 players, and has lots of pieces that will get lost under the couch.
