What you said was rather cruel, but also rather true. If she had no doubt in her mind, your question wouldn't have bothered her, because she would have known that god had a plan (although in practice, that's obviously much harder to do).
If Christianity was true, how could people worship such a sadistic god? A god who does bad things to good people. A god who gives seemingly random people slow and painful deaths without giving them any knowledge that it'll be worth it.
If I were given proof that god existed, sure i would believe in him, but i wouldn't worship him, cause all Christianity has brought is social disorder, wars and racism.
Sorry if this post is less structured and/or polite then my others, but i'm in a rush.

It is true that statement I made, but I would have rather not said it.
But I truly could not stop myself. I was talking to a girl who prays before she does her homework, goes to church on sunday morning, evening, and wednesday night, and she believes that church and schools should become one again.
I wanted to beat her at that arguement, just because she is as stubborn as I am. I wanted her to tell me that there might be a chance that God doesn't exist, but in this cause I went too far.

Hey Skippy don't feel to bad. The debate you had with that girl started out good but you and her messed up by making it personal.

It has been awhile since i've been on the comp sorry i've been on spring break. Skippy i'd like to join because i might as well.
There have been alot of points that have been brought up. I guess i'll start with the one that is most fresh in my head. Skippy and his girl problem. I'm going to start and say we're all human. You messed up, it happens. Its called being human :). But ask yourself did you trully talk to her with an open mind? Wouldn't an open mind accept that, as there is a possiblity that there is no God there is also the possibility that there is one? By you saying "show me proof that there is a God and i'll believe" is the same as me saying "prove to me that there is no God and i'll stop believing". You can't. But if you think you can go ahead i'd love to hear it. Also did you really win the argument by making her stop arguing(sp) and cry? I'd say you only were successful in making her feel bad and questioning her faith. Now questioning your faith is not a bad thing it is human nature to doubt and it makes us stronger. I have doubted the existance of God for many many years but now i can truly say i believe in him.
If she had kept her head though she probably would have said this. God only gives us all what we can handle.
On to other things. To the member who wants to decide if he believes in God or not. I'd say think about it, research it, think about it, sleep on it, pray, and when you've come up with a decission think about it some more. Everyone is biased when it comes to religion. Find your own path. you know what i believe so there is no need in me preaching. But if you have any questions i'll try to help. Just ask.
To the argument that Christianity has done bad things aka wars etc. These problems have arisen with people. God did not say "go forth and smite the wicked". Also, what about the muslim
religion and their Jihads of sort. just a thought.
I'm interested in what you all have to say. Again since we are discussing such a touchy topic there was no intention to offend. i

<needlessly aggressive rant>
I guess the only problem I have with religion today is the fact that most people follow blindly, without question or debate. This is the one and only thing that truly makes me feel that some (maybe most) worshippers are pathetically narrow-minded.
This doesn't apply to people such as maestro1017 and other posters in this thread, but rather people who believe in god because they are told to do so. There is one cause why religion is so popular among non-thinkers, and that is society.
Let's think of the default. When someone is born, they do not suddenly think "hmmm.....I wonder if some omnipotent being has formed the planet and all therein?" Hopefully not, anyway. They are told biased opinions before they have the knowledge to make a judgement for themselves. The reason why people become Christians is because they are told to. By the age of three, they're forced to believe in god, and to me, that's really pathetic. Free will is what makes life worth living, in my opinion.
Also, why should people choose their community's religion over all of the others? Are any other religions given a thought before declairing Christianity? No. Lazyness and lack of free thinking. Sorry, but it had to be said.

that makes alot of sence hyphon..
the govornment is very religiose even though they say the 2 are seperate..you have to put your hand on a bible in court and pledge that you will be honest...a man put a statue of jesus on the cross (it was huge) in the middle of his courtroom and the govornment supplied people to gaurd the courthouse from protestors
people should never follow something so blindly that they put their lives in danger to make other people believe it..its not right...and people come up to my doorstep every sunday (my parents arent home then) and preach to ME a 14 year old about how god is watching out for me and that I should become a good catholic because if i dont AI will burn in eternal hellfire ect ect. I once made the mistake of aurguing with them..I really wanted to finish this drawing I was working on and I talked to them for 2 hours...well..accually they talked AT me....and I had to listen cause I didnt want to make the conversation any longer withought being rude (er).

I would just like to add one thing.
Did you know, that God actually hates shrimp? There are two references in the bible that provide undenyable proof that God hates shrip, lobsters and other water creatures without fins......amazing......
Leviticus 11:9-12 says:
9 These shall ye eat of all that are in the waters: whatsoever hath fins and scales in the waters, in the seas, and in the rivers, them shall ye eat.
10 And all that have not fins and scales in the seas, and in the rivers, of all that move in the waters, and of any living thing which is in the waters, they shall be an abomination unto you:
11 They shall be even an abomination unto you; ye shall not eat of their flesh, but ye shall have their carcases in abomination.
12 Whatsoever hath no fins nor scales in the waters, that shall be an abomination unto you.
...yeah.....cause that just makes loads of sense......

Web Definition: fins - a shoe for swimming; the paddle-like front is an aid in swimming (especially underwater)
Wouldn't that then mean that there flipper count as fins since they aid swimming?

Well its been about two days of no activity so bumpity bump bump to this.
i just saw the Passion of Chirst two days of go. It was a very good movie in my opinion. Mel Gibson did a good job following the scripture. The only part i noticied he didn't follow completly was the death of Judas.
Regardless of your beliefs i think its a good movie and a powerful one at that. I'd recommend (gasp) you all see it.

I myself am a firm atheist, but I believe that statement to be extremely hypocritical. Someone who joins a religion because their parents weened them like that, yes, but most christians make their own decisions, or at least are perfectly capable of doing so. Saying that they should decide what they want to believe is ridiculous, because they are doing so already. If they dont want to believe it, they aren't a christian. If they dont want to believe in God, they dont.
And I would also like to point out that atheism is also a religion.

-Some of you have taken this as funny. But with Religion aside think about what has happened. A girl was hurt to tears. Why was this funny?
Because it was just funny? That is a sad thing to know that someone else could laugh at another's suffering.
Assuming no one here is that calloused why then would this be funny to someone. Because she was a Christian? If it is funny because she was Christian in this case it's obvious that you hate Christianity and view it as your enemy. And hate my friends is the epitome of a closed mindedness and stupidity.

There is absolutly nothing funny about making a sixteen year old girl cry, I still feel awful over the event.
But she made me so angry becuase she was so stubborn. She would not admit that there is a small possibility that there is no God. My philosophy is that anything is possible. Do I believe in God? No. Is there a possibility that he exist? Yes.
I will admit that, I just want religious people to admit that there is a slim chance, even a miniscule chance, that God is not real.

i kno how you feel, i have debates like yours nearly every week. some people will just never listen to what you say, no matter what evidence you provide. she believed what she believed, and you cant change that no matter how hard you try.
I would very much Like to join this club, and Yes, I have agreed with about everything you have said. Many good points out in this thread, lets keep this club alive. I myself, do have many problems with religion, expecially christianity, I do not hate christians, but they seem to... well... fuck up everything they touch. "How so?" They killed alot of scientists in the middle ages, setting us back to retarded age, we nowdays, are about at the same level as the romans.... we are retarded. Crusades, they pissed off the Muslims, they kicked out the jews from the Holylands, everywere the jews went, hate was sure to go. Hitler was a Christian, and his purpose was for a Glorified German, and for Christ. Not to offend anyone, Christianity made some good stuff too! Like WW2! I'm a WW2 nerd.... Anyways, they also made the Middle Ages.

-why do you still feel bad? I guess that means you're a good person :). If you've apoligized there is not reason to feel bad anymore. And if you haven't apoligized it will probably make you feel better.
But she made me so angry becuase she was so stubborn. She would not admit that there is a small possibility that there is no God. My philosophy is that anything is possible. Do I believe in God? No. Is there a possibility that he exist? Yes.
-People do that. Some people make me so angry everyday. But, you see a Christian who loves God cannot say "I don't believe in God or yeah there is a small chance he doesn't exist" And in a way asking this of a Christian is not fair. This is because it is easy for someone who doesn't believe in God to say he could exist or not. Someone who believes in God this is harder. To do so would comprimise their faith and thus ethics, morals etc. But i'd say its closer to betraying someone you love.
I will admit that, I just want religious people to admit that there is a slim chance, even a miniscule chance, that God is not real.
-I cannot tell you that because i truly believe that God exists. But, I can tell you though that as a Christian I have doubted God's existance before and sometimes still do. These doubts though once resolved only stregthen my beliefs.
No offense is intended to anyone.

http://www.infidels.org/news/atheism/
That site is kind of wordy, but it has a lot of information that you could find usefull. Basically though, there are two classes: Atheist, and Agnostic. If you are Atheist, you are completely denying god, and if your Agnostic, you really don't know what to believe. Of course, everybody has there own definitions of what they think.
And I do agree that religion is an evil thing, not to offend of course. But think of a world without religion! No wars over whose God is better. No more sacrificing of lives for a God that probably doesn't exist. And most of all, people would learn to rely on themselves.

-I honestly don't think that would be the case. Many of these wars used Religion as an excuse, true. What was the real reason though? People will always want what is not theirs and hate. And that is the cause of wars.
People will never rely upon themselves as long as its easier and more convienient (sp) to rely on other people or things.
Thats my take. No offense. None taken :). .
