is flash free? Nov. 27th, 2009 @ 12:00 PM Reply

I am new here, but what I want to know is flash free to develop on? I know that the cs stuff is thousands of dollars and I dont really have that money, neither any money to buy programs that are somewhat expensive. I hear of some program called synfig...has anyone tried it yet? I want to know if it can make flash games because its a flash program (but more of an animator). If there are any other programs that are like adobe flash, please tell me :). Thanks, oh I almost forgot, if those other programs use the same code as adobe flash.

The Flex SDK from Adobe is free and uses the same language, Actionscript, as the Flash IDE. You can use it to make games. There is also haXe, which is a different language but also very useful.

Except that both flex and haxe lacks the most critical part, the graphics editor.

if flex can handle .as files you could just send one? but i assume it wont, as all a .as does is export it in the fla as a function, and so uses the exact same code, and so this post is useless :/

Flash is expensive, you can buy it for cheaper off eBay. I'd suggest going with flex though.

There's plenty of animation programs that can publish to SWF, but I'm too lazy too look them up now...

So, can anybody else elaborate on my comment?

People in here going on about alternative programs never actually answered the original question.

To actually answer the OP's question:

"Is Flash free?"

No. Flash is not free.

Flash is not freeware. Adobe (previously Macromedia) is not a charity corporation. They pay a group of programmers to develop digital artist's tools and sell them. Flash was originally developed by Macromedia for commercial use by internet-based advertising companies for the development of online content to promote their wares. Its use as an animation tool for thousands of amateur and professional animators is a happy accident - much like how Adobe Photoshop, which was developed for use by photographers to touch-up photos, has become a premier tool for creating digital illustrations.

does fixel use the adobe programming language so i can use the tutorials around here to help me? what about flash develop. with adobe being a processing monkey...I dont know if it will run good at all on my 64 bit computer because I wasted money on premiere pro and it wasnt compatable with vista 64. could I see the flex sdk in action (like a youtube video or something), and users to users whom use it, what are your thoughts on it? does it work the same, can you at least import pictures (or so called movie clips) and do the stuff adobe flash does or is it a bit more difficult. I am thinking about fixel but like earlier, could I see some pics of it running on windows and/or a video of it in action? thanks

Fixel is an actionscript library as far as I understand it.

Software on eBay is just piracy you have to pay for. Be very careful about that sort of thing.

Not exactly. They sell the CD, not the files. If they sold the program and just cracked it, yes, thats piracy. But since you'll have the CD, its not.

Liveswif.
It's basically a free and slightly crappier version of Flash 5.
Some of the stuff here is made with it.

As if flash is the best graphics editor, i started using flixel for 2 reasons ,

1. Speed and fully OOP based code
2. Raster graphics

You just make tile sheets and export the PNGs with transparency , it lets you make much better graphics with less restriction, and blitting is less taxing on the CPU because your not constantly redrawing vectors

The 30 some posts in this thread barely helped the guy. -_-;

Check out OSflash.org for alternatives to the Flash IDE. Flash itself is not free, but the "language"(Actionscript) is, Open source evem. The free implementation is called Flex and can be found in the Adobe site. Unlike regular Flash movies, Flex applications are completely made in Actionscript with imported assets(images, sounds, etc) via code, which makes it more of a Developers tool rather than an animators, mainly because there's no IDE(Integrated Development Environment, the stage, library, etc, it's all code. You have to visualize it in your head).
Like someone else said your best bet would be to find another software that exports as swf. Flash itself isn't such a great animator program.

BTW, Flixel is an actionscript library that gives it great control over raster graphics, speed and etc. It has nothing to do with animation. :/

I never got a CD for Flash 8. Anytime I need to reload it on another computer I just download it through the Adobe site using my account interface.

Also note: If you bought an earlier version of Flash, or have a valid activation code there-of, the latest version will be available at a discounted price. Flash MX 2004 cost me ~$800 where Flash 8 cost ~$500.
