Anyone else agree that religion is destroying us?
The first time I was screamed at was by my brother, over religion. I was listening to one of my favorite metal bands (Who happen to be Christian), when he ripped the headphones out of my ear, slammed the PSP onto the ground, and screamed at me for "going down the wrong path and listening to all of this 'goth death rock' stuff." He continued to scream at me for about 15 minutes, being that I was trapped in the car ride home after church.
Now he has completely changed, going from listening to horrible gangster rap to gospel music.
For fun.
So I, an Agnostic, am being forced to go to church every Sunday.
I already know, there is nothing I can do about it. If I thought there was, I certainly wouldn't be asking NG for advice.

They are convinced god is on their side. It's impossible to reason with them.

Hmmm...
I'm very anti-religion; but, you know, sometimes you have to let the sheep be sheep (as long as it isn't hurting anyone on a grand scale). Most of my family is adventist (they hate me), and recently my best friend has converted to Mormonism because she's at a vulnerable state of mind and her 'friends' decided to take advantage of it. She's a completely different person now and, yeah, it's hard. But, I have to give it one thing, it's kind of kept her from doing the screwed up stuff she was doing before. I don't know what to say. Bigotry is here to stay, and there will always be people who have to stick their noses into other people's business. There's no way to get rid of it. The only thing I know I can do is live the way I think is right, and hope to leave some sort of impression on others to change and make a difference.
"It's a poor sort of memory that only works backward."
You know, my dad has been all born again christian. I don't see him that often, and I don't believe in the bible or any religion or whatever. But when I'm around him I'll humor his silly beliefs... because he's my dad and I still love him.
So if you don't want to believe whatever, than that's fine... but try not to get confrontational with your family members who do have those kinds of beliefs. Let them keep their delusions... it helps them sleep at night or something.
Just keep doin what your doin man. Don't announce that your agnostic or anything, just chill and observe. I don't think religion is a bad thing overall, nor does it intend to do bad. But, let's face it, there's a trail of blood that leads to religion. Just keep yourself educated. Look into the egyptian religion and the Sumerians. You'll find that most of Christian religion is a plaguarism of the egyptian religion......and even that, is copied from the sumerians, which were on the same trade route.
Look man, i was raised mormon, and i played their games for awhile. Until one day they asked me to pass sacrament and i refused. Which i got a lot of crap about..But, i dunno. Just keep play the game, try not to piss anybody off too much. Because in the end, religion is a great social network that you can use later on in life when it comes to needing a job, or help with something. It's not much different than the illuminati.
Meh, I'm religious to a certain extent, but I'm not an asshole about it.
Some people get so obsessed it is more than slightly ridiculous. My (ex)best friend used to be really cool, but she got a religious boyfriend and now she is literally /constantly/ talking about "what god is leading her to do".
She won't even watch scary movies anymore, because god wouldn't like it. It's ridiculous.
When people let religion turn them into dickweeds they are just making the rest of the world hate it (and therefore destroying the point).

As opposed to atheists who are so convinced God doesn't exist its impossible to reason with them.

Well how can you? Religion's biggest argument is "YOU'RE GONNA BURN IN HELL!"
We atheists just go: yeah sure we'll believe in when we see it."
Thats basically what atheism is. We'll believe it when we see it.
Note, this next paragraph is about extremists, not the common people.
Anyways, in my personal opinion religion is a scam. It's was created and existed today because it can, and does, hold tremendous sway over millions of people. If a holy man goes "we must not eat for a week and starve ourselves to death" Thousands of people will blindly go to their death in the name of God, a human weakness in which we need something to believe in in order to get on with our miserable lives. God is an excuse. Its an object we use for making ourselves look better in the eyes of other people. Atheists can go "my life sucks." Religious people go "my life sucks but im going to pretend im happy in order to go to heaven" It a weakness of the human social structure, in which we need to look better, feel better, and BE better, in every single way we possibly can. It just the way we are, striving for excellence to the point of fanaticism.
Thats all.
for now.....MUAHAHAHAHA!
I find that every religious group has everything from casual believer to zealots save one: Agnostics
Atheists can be still be everything from casual believer to a zealot as well. Only the agnostics who aren't really sure whats out there can not be zealots. How can you when you aren't even sure whats out there.

That's actually a more agnostic view.
Atheism is more of a refusal that a "God" exists at all.
This signature makes use of various clichés and/or 'emotional' lyrics/quotes, hopefully it makes me appear deep.

Atheism is generally defined as the lack of belief in a god, not the refusal to believe. Many atheists do not like people to claim that atheists refuse that a god exists. Agnosticism is basically the view that the existence of god is unknowable. It is possible to be an agnostic atheist, it is also possible to be an agnostic theist. If anything the refusal of theism would be much closer to strong atheism.
You most likely were referring to strong atheists but since there are different kinds of atheists you can't always lump them into the same category. Many people that call themselves agnostic are just agnostic atheists but they have the wrong idea of what atheism is.
Damn man, I'm sorry about that. Your brother sounds like a douche to me, I mean you were listening to some harmless music. I don't see a reason why your brother would think that would make you go on the wrong path, but whatever...The only advice I can give is to just ignore them.
Shut up already.
If your brother was a hardcore atheist and you were reading a bible perhaps he'd probably do the same thing, so no religion is not destroying us WE are, it's just human fucking nature to be dicks about anything they feel is right or whatever.

Well first of all...
Atheism is the belief that nothing exists EVER. You must be thinking of religious-nihilism. I did a report on Atheism and it's true meaning, because I was sick of people going "DUR HUR I'M ATHEIST I DONT BELIEVE IN A GOD" So you sir are wrong.
Well.
Shit.

i love it when you post in religious threads
exactly my thoughts x3
that..or you could kill your brother...
but first you have to kill god
Not only do I not know what's going on, I wouldn't know what to do about it if I did.
this is one of many reasons why i became an atheist, I hate people who think they are almighty and serve someone with a purpose while at the same time preaching to me about crap i really don't care to hear about.
btw. this has a potential to turn into a christian/atheist flame war, and im not going to be the one to start it.

Well if you word it like that, technically you are wrong on the definition. It's very commonly said that atheism is not a belief but a absence of belief. Also, saying it's the belief that NOTHING EXISTS is wrong, it's simply the lack of belief in a god. I'm not sure if you have the wrong idea about what atheism is or if you have the right idea but have worded it all wrong.

They can strongly disagree all they want they still can't change the definition of atheism to what they want it to be.

What is commonly said is extremely relevant when it comes to definitions. Words and definitions of those words are made up by people, the most popular definitions for these words are the ones that become used. Since a majority of actual atheists agree with the definition I have provided and disagree with yours I would say my argument is valid.

I would do that to, if someone I knew was starting to listen to really really terribly awfully shitty horrible music.
