I mic my cab usually. I also sometimes direct in through my m-audio fasttrack and use amplitube.

Ive been at this war for ages and Ive done two methods...

Method A..Running my effects processor straight into my sound card with a 1/4" to 1/8" adapter...sounded decent because the effects processor could make for a decent sound but the sound card made it sound way too thin...

Method B.. & current method....I use a Shure SM57 Mic ($99Bucks) and a M-Audio Fast Track Pro Interface ($199Bucks with 2inputs and 48V Phantom power) As of now I like my amps sound and it does sound a lot better with a better microphone.. heres a sample of the fast track and mic with a Fender Strat and a Crate GT65... Not much was done to the guitar sound in the song if your wondering.. thats pretty much the raw sound

There are tonnes of ways to do this.

I used to Mic up my amp, the Mic Would go to a mixer, and the mixer would go to my computer. This was a nice way to record if you wanted a more natural sound, a bit of air to fluff up the tone of the guitar.

I also used to run the amp directly from amp to the mixer, and mixer to computer.

But now since my 300 pound mixer has died, I just run my 'Line 6 Spider 3' directly to the computer. It gives a nice enough sound. You really need to work on EQ, and defining the sound though.
