I say go for it, the people who oppose the plan are not generals, so either you pull out entirely or add the troops, as let us remember a great leader who lost a war because he didn't listen to his General's, his name is Adolf Hitler.

34,000 troops? for once I can say Obama did something right. Good job President Obama, for not completely bending to the will of your lackeys, but instead listening (for the most part) to your general, even if it did take 3 months to do it.
I'm not crazy, everyone else is.
Not surprising. Really, what else was he going to do? Pull out? As far as I could tell, there was no other sensible course of action. That said, I applaud him for making sure he was doing the right thing...I just hope he doesn't take quite so long next time.

I don't care that he's black, I actually don't agree with some of the issues that he is trying to enforce, such as the national health care system. This country is not built to support a democratic socialist system. But i digress; on topic, I think he should have sent more than what he did. He didn't do it because he thought it was best, he just listened to his Generals, which most Presidents did. Nothing special. Being President is an important job, I will not cut him any slack. And really, I think some traitors NEED to be executed, such as the murderer at the fort hood incident. And I do thank god that I was born into a country in which I can show my opinion for or against whom I please. Telling me to shut up, even if I don't support the current government or President, is unAmerican. If you don't like something, you have a right to complain. (And you do have the right to tell me to shut up, just as I have the right to ignore you :D)

I think it was a good decision, but I laugh at some of the hypocrisy. Yes, Afghanistan is a more sensible target than Iraq, but the same people who wanted absolutely no military presence at all in the middle east during the bush jr regime are applauding obama for listening to the same general that told bush to go to iraq. (I think he is the same, I don't think his end term is for another two or so years) WTF people? I can understand some, who questioned 'why iraq', but the vast majority were people who wanted absolutely no presence and all of a sudden changed their mind.

I just pray that there aren't too many stings attached to the point that the extra troops will be useless.

When I said Great Leader I meant in his leadership capabilities, getting Germany from the rubble of the Treaty Of Versailles to its former potent state of power and having the capabilities of forming a Empire again, then conquering countries like Poland and France within weeks. But when the decision came to to attack either Ukraine or to put those forces in the attack on Moscow, thats when it went downhill, and his generals advised him to send those southern forces to Moscow. If he did he would have demoralized the Russians and leave them without a leader.

ok, just so you all know how the president decides how many troops he is going to send know this...
the high brass at the pentagon create different plans with a number of troops who are to be used according to said plan... if memory serves me right the pentagon set four options before the president and he declined all of them so the pentagon has to make new plans for the presidents approval...
with that being said, any news that you might come across is purely speculation until the president gives the go ahead on whatever plan he chooses... we should know by next tuesday (or a month ago but who is counting)
ANY DAY now, he'll bring our boys home as promised, just you wait and see...
I'm pretty sure he said he'd be pulling troops out of Iraq and sending more to Afghanistan.

LOL
If you had paid attention to his campaign he said he was going to do exactly this. He said we needed to draw down in Iraq so we could focus on the failures we had in Afghanistan.
So yeah, does anyone actually think the other NATO countries will really pull their own weight?

Seriously? 20,000? Maybe 5,000 maximum but this? Just take everyone out of Iraq and put them in afganistan.
Obama didn't make it up, his General's proposed it, like I said earlier, Hitler lost his war because he didn't listen to his general's, and of course this war in itself is starting to get a little pointless, its like Vietnam in the sense that we just kept pumping troops in hoping that would solve the problem but it didn't.

The UK is eventually transferring all personnel previously serving in Iraq to Afghanistan, but we only have between 1/8 and 1/6 of the personnel that US has available so we can't just throw 20,000+ over there. Plus, we have an election in a few months so every bastard politician is going to be using Afghanistan in their (quite frankly) bollocks manifesto's.
Unfortunately, we're also currently suffering from an increased casualty rate due to massive cuts to the military budget (apparently the bankers are in desperate need of solid gold houses, so I understand why they need it more...).

Yeah, he took out a meager amount of troops in Iraq and replaced them with contractors and has so far thrown 50k troops into Afghanistan (and people said we were stretched thin) to continue nation building and occupation with same so-called "goal" of the last administration.
Yeah, he's really carried through on that promise.

Frankly I don't care if he sends thirty-thousand troops or thirty-million; what I do care about are these two issues:
How are we going to continue funding this war?
What are we going to do there? What is the goal?

To remove elements of insurgency, and prevent the taliban from allowing an al-qaeda-friendly state from forming where state-sanctioned murder and executions based on archaic religious principles are sanctioned. I'd say that's unequivocally the goal. We're there to make sure terrorism and specifically the organization responsible for 9/11, is no longer a dominant problem in the world.

Dont forgot also to get rid of the nuclear bombs also so we all dont die.
I wish they have went for the kill in Tora Bora, just to let you know, it's not in hindsight. They should have went for it.

To be honest, any amount of soldiers he sends is useless without the help of Pakistan. That's where the major leadership of the Taliban and Al Qaeda are based and that's where we need to be targeting.

Looks like the speech is a few minutes away. Now is it really a good idea to detail a plan to leave before you even send the extra troops in the first place?
"Communism is the very definition of failure." - Liberty Prime.
Well, Obama's speech was certainly interesting, more along the lines of "Here's a job we don't really want to do but have to" and trying to bring Pakistan into it as well.
Other interesting point, it was much more straight forward and not as lovely dovey as he's done earlier. Also worth mentioning is Obama gave the dates and a time frame.
