This topic is severely lacking Brian May. The guitarist from Queen, and mastermind of some of their greatest hits. He built his own guitar from the remains of a fireplace as a teenager. He has a degree in astro-physics and is more hair than man.

Oh did I forget to mention, he can play geetar on a skate board?

No, Eddie was always the guitarist... and damn good at it too. Eddie Van Halen was my runner up choice.

Jimi Hendrix was the best. Personally, I think Slash is the coolest.

Jimi Hendrix?
Overrated!?

Obviously, you've only heard his mainstream songs, which I don't care for much either.
Might I suggest 1983... (A Merman I Should Turn to Be). Sounds good, man.

Apples and oranges thread.
Done far too many times before, always ends with flaming and arguments.

Now to contribute, IN MY OPINION, my favourite guitarists are Gary Moore, Mark Knopfler and Steve Rothery.

So they made me their chief...which was nice.

Dude you don't understand. These aren't the whiney little imitators you see doing this stuff today, the are the original pioneers that did these things. Its not like today were every crappy band lights a guitar on fire, Hendrix invented that.

For OP I don't know who the best really is, but I think Jimi Hendrix had the most lasting effect with the experimentation he did with the electric guitar.

Wow I didn't think anyone would notice.

This topic disappoints me. Most of the users just posted note worthy guitarists without any reason. We get that you like Jimi Hendrix, but you could could give us explanation to why YOU think he is a great guitarist.

Buckethead! Has anyone here heard the song Jordan?

Everyone's heard Jordan. Jordan is hardly his best work. You don't know Buckethead if you've only heard Jordan. Don't get me wrong, it's a good song, but extremely entry level. Just pick up Monsters and Robots and tell me that isn't a guitar genius.

I love bucketheads work, especially his Dimebag Darell tribute.

I'm sorry but Hendrix wasn't that great. He didn't know how to control his fuzz or distortion. It sounded crappy and you couldn't really hear what he was playing.

The best TWO guitarsist are Eddie Van Halen, and Les Paul (R.I.P.)

are you stupid? He purposely used distortion in his music, he was just about the only guitarist that could actually pull off using it.

Eddie Van Halen hands down. He's the one that started using the double handed hammer on and pull offs.

But a guy who is destined to become a great is Thomas Erak. He has some of the fastest hands I've ever seen and while doing that he sings beautifully and screams harshly. And that pretty good considering he's only been playing guitar since 2000.

Just watch his fucking hands, and call me a liar.

Not really man. Watch the woodstock stuff. He plays good, just too much fuzz and distortion! It's hard to hear what he's actually playing. On top of that, too much whammy bar too! And I hate these people that think that speed is better, no it's not. SRV, Eric Clapton, Les Paul, and Santana don't play fast! They play nice and smooth and people don't apreciate it because it's all about speed now and these days.

slash? really? He's good, but no where near the best.
Also, joe satriani. I personally don't like his songs too much, but he is godly.

This is my last post concerning you, if you think that those guitarists cant play fast and still be epic then there is something wrong with you. who do you think is the best guitarist.

Listen to the song (or the album for that matter) "Maggot Brain" by Funkadelic. Tell me I'm wrong. He did that whole 10 minutes in one take...
