I've heard people wonder, "Is Swine Flu dangerous? People have died from it, therefore if I get it, I'll probably die from it or be hospitalized."

I had swine flu over the weekend (better now,) and it is such a wussy disease.
I had a backache for one day, a slightly clogged nose, no appetite, a persistant but not painful cough, and some paleness.

All I did was rest for 2 days and take Tamiflu, and by the end of the weekend I was back to normal.

I've had colds worse than this little swine flu.
Swine flu's only dangerous if you're a baby, 100 years old, pregnant, or if you have a pre-existing medical condition that you should already be in the hospital for. Assuming that most of us are not at the age extremes, expecting, or have already horrible diseases, you'll be fine.

Don't worry about Swine Flu. If you get it, stay home because you will feel like crap, but if this is the worst disease you've ever had, consider yourself lucky.

Just because it didn't hit you hard, doesn't mean that it doesn't affect other's much harsher. A guy I work with's kids both had to be hospitalized due to it.

Also swine flu doesn't hit the very young or the very old the hardest. The age range that it hits hardest is generally 12 - 23ish if I recall correctly.

Now I'm not going to drastically change my life due to this diseases, primarily because I'm not in the biggest risk group, but it does warrant enough attention to take the normal precautions.

Hmm, that's not good. If you aren't part of a group that's at an elevated level of risk and you take Tamiflu then you're only increasing the risk that a brand of the swine flu virus that's resistant to Tamiflu becomes dominant in your body and that you then spread it. Even though you might not personally be put in danger because of it, you could infect people with your new brand who might have actually needed Tamiflu.

It's still concerning because you can pass it onto those who are susceptible.
Won't hurt you, but it may for others.

Is it serious? Of course! Is it blown out of preportion in regards to other ways we're killing ourselves? Definitely.

I had it too. Like you said, I've had plenty of other illnesses much worse. I had rhotovirus in like 2003, and that was the worst experience of my life. and I've had a baby. I'd rather have another baby, than have rhotovirus again.

But, like fli and our other poster said, that doesnt mean we should ignore it. Staying home when you're sick with anything serious is a smart idea.

Two of my friends got it. One had a mild fever and headaches and was at home for 5 days. My other friend had very persistent vomiting and diarrhea for two weeks. It really depends on the person.

But I think that they may miss diagnose swine flu sometimes. My friend who had it mild said that the doctor diagnosed it swine simply because he had headaches and a fever and to be safe he should just stay home. It could have easily not been swine flu but because its so huge right now the doctor just assumed it was swine.

Yeah I'm trying to figure out how everyone figures out they have the swine flu. At the concert I just got back from someone said that they had just gotten over it and never went to the doctor. So I was wondering how the hell they knew they had it and didn't just have something else.

ok... so the big danger isnt the swine flu as it stands these past few months but in actuality the possibility for a new, stronger, deadlier flu to mutate from the one thats going around now.

flu season has begun and the only way you will know if you have the a-h1n1 strain is with a clinical test

last but not least... if you want to see a really scary scenario look at the "pneumonic plague" that is going around the ukraine... the media isnt covering it and over 1,000,000 people are said to have it... we cant stop it because its brand new and serious cases report lungs filled with blood... close to 200 people have died and it started a week and a half ago. oh, yeah, and if you wondered why you havnt heard about it is because mass media isnt covering it at all... i smell something fishy about it to be honest

The issue of it being fatal is two-fold. It's far more dangerous to people with already surpressed or suboptimal immune systems, i.e. pregnant women, the young, the old, people already or getting over being sick. The other situation is inadequate medical care, whether voluntary or not. If someone gets swine flu and doesn't adequately treat the symptoms of flu its very dangerous. High body temperatures are debilitating. If you let it get away from you there's not much you can do about it before irreparable damage is done. People need to know the facts and respond accordingly. Knowledge is half the battle.

You really had the swine flu? Anyway, I think you're right in that people are overreacting seeing as how we have the swine flu vaccine. My mother has had a very bad case of laryngitis which is starting to get better, thank God. I do not think there ever was any cause for alarm.

Yeah, but people talk a lot of bullshit.

A few older folks in Sweden died within days of getting the vaccine. They too, like most H1N1 flu deaths, had underlying medical conditions.

Wonder how many people died this year of regular flu around the world compared to swine flu...It's the same story that the media/governments blow crap out of proportion. Anyone here remember good old bird flu? Same situation.

I remember a quote about this somewhere:

100 people get swine flu and everyone wants to wear masks on their face.
1,000,000 people get AIDS and no one wants to wear a condom.

One of the most true statements ever made.

Swine flu is a pandemic because it has a really lethal side to it. It kills. yet it only infect a few people. the argument that the flu kills more people is stupid because the flu death rate is really low, yet swine flu's death rate is in the double digits somewhere.
thats why swine flu is something to worry about, but not something incredibly urgent.

Seasonal Flu deaths in the USA per year - approximately 36,000 americans
Swine Flu deaths in the USA this year - 2104 americans
The stats are the same for Canada, about 5000 a year die to seasonal flu, with only 250 people dieing from H1N1.

Everyone (with a government job) over exaggerated H1N1 from the get go, I remember hearing Australia's health minister back in April estimating 6000 Auzzies were going to to die from H1N1, in reality they lost under 200 from it, and their flu season is over.

Considering we know that this thing isn't killing what "they" estimated, and we don't know the exact outcome of being injected with Arepanrix (Canadas H1N1 vaccine, I know, so far so good), I'll take my chances on the flu.

Well you should still at least TRY to get it. Better safe than sorry you know? That basically whats driving this whole mess, except upscale to "if you dont get it you'll die."

And then there's Fox News. The vaccine is not a poison you fucking morons.

Well, technically, when you break down the components of the vaccine:
Thimerosal - Organic Mercury, watch its effects here.
Formaldehyde - used to preserve dead things, like the virus.
Polysorbate 80 - Read about its infertility abilities here.
Squalene - The stuff partially responsible for Gulf War Syndrome.
DL-%u03B1-tocopherol - A type of vitamin E
Sodium Deoxycholate - an acid used to break things down
Sucrose - Sugar

The only thing in that list I would voluntarily ingest is sugar.

I'm not taking the vaccine, since I think it's not worth it, but believing the vaccine will kill more than the virus is stupidity at best and tin-foil-hatty at worst. Basically, it all goes down to:
1. Taking it - huge risk of being mildly sick for a few days.
2. Not taking it - small risk of being moderately sick for a week, minimal risk of getting seriously ill.

Well in Sweden it has. 5 deaths within days of receiving vaccine, and 3 within days of getting the virus itself. This doesn't mean I believe the vaccine WILL kill more than the virus.

15 people has died of the flu, 1 person by the vaccine. You can't count people who were going to die within days anyway. Also, the person who died from the vaccine had just gone through a heart transplant.

http://vlt.se/nyheter/1.654367-man-dog-a v-vaccinet

3 300 000 people has taken the vaccine in Sweden. I don't know how many has gotten the flu, but I don't think it's even in the hundreds of thousands yet.
