Thrill kill victim suffered 'horrific' injuries
HOMICIDE DETECTIVE BRIAN RIX SAYS THE MURDER OF A VAGRANT WHOSE BODY HAS BEEN FOUND IN A MELBOURNE RIVER APPEARS TO HAVE BEEN A "THRILL KILL".
Police believe a homeless man whose body was found in a Melbourne river may have been murdered in a gang-related thrill killing.
Detective Inspector Brian Rix described the injuries on the man, believed to be in his early 60s, as horrific.
"We believe he was a harmless old man and the only motive we can establish at this stage is that it has been a thrill killing," Det Insp Rix told reporters.
The man's body was found in the Maribyrnong River in Footscray Park, near Flemington Racecourse last Friday.
The man kept to himself and had been seen in the park warming himself by a barbecue.
He had been assaulted before he was thrown in the river, police said.
More than one person is believed to be behind the attack as the man, who weighed 86kg and was 180cm tall, may have been dragged several hundred metres before being thrown into the river.
"I would describe the people who did this as animals but that would be a slur on animals," Det Insp Rix said.
Police have received anecdotal evidence of a history of assaults in the park.
"But we need more than anecdotal evidence. We need people to come forward and tell us any assaults that have happened in the park, so we can find out what happened to this poor man," Det Insp Rix said.
The man, who had a grey streaked beard, long hair and wore a baseball cap emblazoned with the word "Chef" had been living in the park for several months.
He was often seen by park users quietly reading books or listening to his portable radio, police said.
Police have recovered some of the man's belongings, which included bags of clean clothes, and will conduct a line search over the park to find further evidence.
Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Pieces of shit... when I read that I felt this anger coming up inside (like when the 11 yo was raped behind the train). Stuff like this really makes me hate people.
Quote of the day: @Nysssa "What is the word I want to use here?" @freakapotimus "Taint".

I'd seen that guy about a month ago. My classmates made quite a joke of him. I feel sorry for the guy. He was obviously down on his luck. And a thrill kill is the only real possibility. He can't have had a lot of money, and noone seems to know who he was, so there isn't any known motives. One thought I had amused me though, has anyone seen the opening scene to the movie "Dogma"?
