Yes he did...his skin was mottled because of that pigment thing so he made himself completely white by bleaching the still-black bits.

He also got burned really badly, so you can't really fault him for that. Pigment disease + Burn scars and mottling from that = Need for plastic surgery. Probably the only one he actually really needed, to be honest.
