i guess just because deaths in GTAIV dont look as realistic. plus the people you "kill" dont necessarily die. they kinda fall unconscious.
it is true. he is AlWAYS watching!
Why did it warn me that I may find this level upsetting yet all the other levels with killing are fine and dandy.
Is the only difference between whether it's right or wrong to shoot these guys the fact that they have a gun in their hand or not?
The militia aren't even trained soldiers.

Because innocent civilians, as opposed to a murdurous terrorist, pose no threat.

You think all the soldiers would be pro war? I'm sure there would be a few objectors in there... if there'd be any real reason to code that into the AI.
And when you're shooting the militia. I was under the impression I was in their country. So I was wondering about their town willy nilly. I was the invader.
It's just a whole load of moral ambiguity.
I killed EVERYBODY inclueding the guys u start with, which cause you to FAIL the mission. I then did it againg the "right" way only to be betrayed at the end of the mission? What a bunch of BS I backstabbed them FIRST!!!!!!
This scene left me with a rather shocked/worried feeling. It made me feel really down watching all the people try desperately (and failing) to run from me and my commrades as we slaughtered them. It carried a lot of weight behind it because never before have I had to mow down so many civilians in one place or time. It was just a strange feeling.
And to those saying GTA was no different... Yes it was. I played those games with the intention of not killing all the civilians I came across. My real target was the challenge the police offered me as resistance grew and the missions therein. Plus, they'd just run away comically or yell funny-ass one liners. The civies in "No Russian" did not do that. The direness of the situations compared are not realistic to me, and therefore are completely different.
The first time I even saw that mission was when I was playing with my brother. We took turns during each level, and I got stuck with that one. Our first thoughts were...
"ARE YOU FUCKING SERIOUS!!!!"
We kept yelling that the entire level. I just walked behind the terrorists, never shooting or killing anyone until the cops came (because at that point you don't have much of a choice).
The realism was scary as shit. The most chilling part was when I came across a bloody teddy bear next to some man's body. I got sick to my stomach. Thank god no children were present at that level, but the implication that there were was bad enough. Children present would have been....too bad to handle.
I've only played that mission twice, the second time I did shoot people. The first time was for the shock value, and the message that terrorism is real and fucking scary. InifinityWard definitely took a risk with this level to tell a story and a message, and I applaud them for it. Putting yourself in the gunman's shoes tells the story in a better way than if you had been a civilian.
The second time I was over the shock, and had to go back to saying that this is just a video game. I had received the message and understood it. Now I could just go about killing.
In a way...it only enforced the message. With every kill I felt more guilty.
I'm a bit disappointed that I watched the video online before actually playing it. There was no shock value, so I wasn't really affected emotionally by the scene. I really would like to know how I would have reacted if I didn't know it was coming. As it was though, I shot everyone I could, even that one guy that was trying to drag someone else to safety.

I tried beating the mission by not killing everyone and was doing well until I encountered stiff resistance from that SWAT team and Makarov was waaay too impatient for me to figure out a way to get past them in a non lethal fashion.

I just tried to kill as much people as i could and i laughued for the whole crowd killing part =D
You guys know that you didnt HAVE to kill the civilians, right? you could easily walts through that level without killing them (though, when it came to the Russian soldiers, you did have to in order to escape). People who said "OMG THIS IS HORRIBLE!" while holding dow the trigger has something wrong with them.
Yeah, I don't speak much...
Definitely not the first time this has been done. Hell people have been doing this ever since the second Grand Theft Auto.

I think the difference in context is what sells it. COD has always been associated with realism to a certain extent, whereas Grand Theft Auto is more of a parody.

I freaking loved it. that is my favorite part in the game.
my sig has fighters in it bitches
Wouldn't say it was amazing, but yes, it was pretty amazing!!
It was sad, really. But eh, it's just a game. I felt like I was playing GTA for a minute.
I thought the level was fun and i honestly didnt have a problem shooting them down. (dont get me wrong im not a psychomaniac) it was a video game. all there is to it so it didnt bother me.
i love the level
If you feel like giving me a piece of your mind keep it i dont think you can afford to lose anymore
Russia Took Modern Warfare 2 off the shelves because of that scene

Wow that's ridiculous.... well if a game was giving me a bad rep with the rest of the world i wouldnt want people playing it either...

I thought it was pretty cool to play as the bad guy for once. Noob tubing the airport cops was funny, and it's funny how they give you an RPD so you can just spray bullets. O_o
In all seriousness though, yeah IW made a good point by creating this scene by showing the world that terrorism is crap
That was undeniably the best level in the game, and if you ask me, the most fun. Apart from playing on veteran, which was quite easy this year, i checked how many innocents i killed. 140 :D
Knifed some crawling old lady in the throat.
I was a bit disturbed while playing it, but I did play it all the way through and didn't find it that bad.
What IW should have done to make it more realistic and dramatic is have a woman trip while running, and then have her butt-scoot over to a wall, with you standing over her, the whole time her screaming. Makarov would hand you a pistol and say "Finish her off", or something to that effect, and you should have to do something similar to the last mission. If you didn't do it in 15 seconds or something, it should be game over.
I felt bad, I still think about it.
I would have, but then I started seeing reused character models. Shooting "innocent civilians" wearing the same clothes, same haircut, etc. reminded me that it was just a game...
And a mediocre game at that.
All these replys are stupid.
you got childs whining that they feel bad and sad about it and some nerdy trolls saying they liked killing the innocents either to be different and cool or to start a flame war.
In all seirousness, it really doesnt matter.
