Assume with me that the universal passage of time is merely a set of state transitions from A to B controlled by guiding principles and that everything is entirely determined so that even if you were able to back time up, if you were who you were then things would still come out the same.

Ok, now, understand that if you don't like my assumptions you can buzz off as the rest of the topic relies on them.

Now, the next bit of set up is that you need a teleporter or you know, one of those things on start trek that can make any food you're capable of programming into it. Only, you need a really big one capable of rearranging all of the molecules within range of it into whatever pattern it decides it needs within the range of several light years. The actual physics of this is not entirely relevant, but the gadget would create an event horizon wave that mutates anything which comes inside of it into what needs to be there and it would expand for all time from the epicenter at which it was created, thereby rendering itself as a new reality.

Now the idea is that you know exactly how a specific time period was set up down to the last interstellar particle X years ago and you want to exist X years ago. So you set off this machine. It copies over the current universe replacing it with an old version, just like a hard disk and places a copy of present day or future day you in the recorded copy of the old universe.

Wa la.

Kind of like how in Futurama the engines don't move the ship, they move the whole universe around the ship. Or something.

So what inspired this idea?

I was just trying to figure out how time travel could work. :)

I'd laugh from the grave if anyone ever actually did this.

I've always wanted time travel to exist like that just so I can brag about losing my virginity several times over.

But frankly, I've never had a real interest in time travel on any level. Frankly what with all nine million drawbacks and all 30 different laws of time travel or whatever (Fuck, there's the Butterfly Effect kind, Back to the Future kind, Terminator kind... Never really ends) it has kind of just made me completely disinterested.

That's the funny thing isn't it. With a machine like that you don't have to time travel, you can simply make a new universe to your liking. There'd be no point in going back in time unless you were eccentric enough to do so. Which you know, would be fun.

if you travel close to light speed, you'll go faster forward in time.
it is also said, that if you go faster, you'll go backward.

If you wrote a mindfuck of a science-fiction novel out of this idea I'd buy it.

I live by the theory that if time travel machines were invented in the future, they'd exist already. See, the person who invents it will have created one of the greatest inventions mankind has ever known. However, after the invention comes into being, someone to the future of that will take the machine and go back in time and claim to have invented it earlier. And then earlier and earlier, so that time machines have always and will always be around.

Well, either that or your hard drive idea axpanded into a universal four dimensional time-map where molecular placement can be distorted and arranged to accomodate for people existing in different times, different places at the same time, and I suppose, if you could mess about with molecular placement all you want, you could create people on a whim according to this program "time machine" which would be more of a god program, I guess.

I think you just might be on to something, although it wouldn't really be time travel, it would be creating your own possible universe.

I can just imagine billions of years in the future this being the equivalent of an xbox, with UltraDVD's being already programmed with an entire universe, And the little aliens playing human hominid or something.

I think it'd be interesting. Just seeing how many ways things could pan out just by doing something else entirely.

But at the same time, you could go back and rewrite history...

OR FIX IT.

This is what I was going to say as well. Anyway...

So, before this machine is even built, we should start recording the presence of every single molecule of this time, so we can recreate it later with your "time machine".

So I'll get us started... There's a chair over there, a cup of Orange Juice on the counter, I'm on the sofa and my wallet is on the ground beside me. How many molecules is that?

Wouldn't re-writing the universe kinda destroy the old one? I mean, that would have to be the point in the first place, I suppose, but it just seems a bit daft effectively making a new universe like that.

Since this isn't real time travel, would you be able to go back (assuming real time travel was part of your 'new' universe) and see yourself setting the machine off? Now THAT would be a mindfuck!

I think we should henceforth arrest all time traveling research scientists for infinite attempted murder and crimes against the future.

That's discrimination towards people with alternative time-travel theories.

I dont see the big deal about time travel, myself! Everyone on the planet does it everyday and no-one makes a big deal out of it. Pity though that no-one has figured out the going backwards part yet. Then it might get interesting. But seriously this going forwards in time stuff is quite boring and slow.

I prefer my theory of moving into a parallel universe that follows the path that would occur if you travelled back to that point in time. Of course, with this theory, it you could travel to other people's dimensions due to the fact that an action has an equal and opposite reaction - or that an action could have an infinite other actions it could have been. Thus infinite time and space combinations could be possible.

Of course I have no scientific fact to base this, but it's a nice idea.

Super Tardis FTW! Makes me want to watch Primer for the first time.
