Looking at guitars to play metal...

I'm extremely interested learning guitar, and seeing as christmas will be my only opportunity to get one for a while I thought I'd ask now. My friend also wants me to learn so we can start a band together after a while.

I have to say after talking to my friend who plays an Ibanez that I'm more interested in them than any other guitar atm, but suggestions are welcome.

I've dabbled in guitar playing last year, but didnt really take it seriously, and never even tried to learn simple songs such as Smoke On The Water or Iron Man etc..

But now I'm more than willing to learn, as it will not only give me another hobby to keep me interested but I can then jam with my other mates band.

Please only musicians that know what they're talking about post here.

I'd say £200/£300 would be the limit for my first geetaar.

So any suggestions my dear friends?

I've been looking at the Ibanez GRG170DX, it's pretty cheap and looks the sex.

Considering I'm not going to really buy a guitar for it's specific sound till maybe my second one, I think this one looks pretty awesome.

Why don't you buy something like a theremin or an electric violin and actually learn to play something that kicks extreme ass and people will respect you for and find unique, rather than being mediocre-minus teenage rock musician wannabe #26,376?

I don't intend on being a mediocre-minus teenage rock wannabe, I'm dedicated to actually being skilled, I want to play along to songs I love, I want to write my own songs.

I'm not going to learn Smells Like Teen Spirit and call myself a pro, so shush.

A Squier Bullet or fender Stratocaster are really good beginner guitars. Sadly i didn't choose them and got a bootleg gibson SG by silvertone, it's not so bad though.

I've had mine for so long and have yet to upgrade it, just plays too well. It comes with great stock pickups, inf 3 and 4, but I upgraded mine to some more expensive EMGs.
