I've been having sleep paralysis alot lately, around once a week. For those of you who don't know, sleep paralysis is when you wake up, but you can't move. This causes you to go into a state of panic, but you can't do anything and can last for upto 10 minutes.

As I've said, this has been happening quite alot to me, and I was wondering if anyone around knew what the problem would be that's causing it.

I think I had sleep paralysis just once, I tried to go to sleep which was hard, so I ended up doing something like trying to move small parts of my body like my fingers then gradually working up and up..then I broke out of it

That sounds strange. The best thing you can do is probably go to a doctor. Is it an automatic thing panicking, or is it something that most people do? You could try and fight the fear if it's not automatic.

Didn't Edison or someone do this with a coin to cause sleep paralytis? Someone posted a thread about this a while back IIRC.

Read the wikipedia article if you want to know some reasons why sleep paralysis occurs

Also out of curiosity, have you ever had hallucinations? That can happen to some people too

I have no idea what causes it, but it's happened to me in the past. It happened frequently (once every few nights or so) for a bit, and then after some time it just stopped happening.

I don't know if that's any indication of what'll happen with your situation. But in any case, try reading up on it; maybe you'll find a solution.

Yes there is. There used to be a guide on it, however I can not find it now.

Basically you need to trick your brain into thinking you are asleep. So what you need to do is just lie there in bed.

Do not move AT ALL! Just lie there. After about 2 minutes, you will feel the need to move. Ignore it! Keep still and keep trying to dream, do not move, keep still. After about 15 - 30 minutes you will find that you will no longer be able to feel your body.

There you have it. You are now in sleep paralysis. You will not be able to move, yet your mind will still be awake and thinking.

Now, how do you get out of it? Try to wiggle your toes as much as you can, or just small parts of your body. Once you can do that, work your way up. After about 5 minutes, you should be able to move again. Simple :)

This is what I do. Although sleep paralysis doesn't cause me to panic, like it does with the OP. Maybe the first time it did but now it's just one of those things.

This happened to me about 2 weeks ago, scariest shit ever, I was laying there, and all of the sudden this guy with a surgeons mask comes up to me, and I can't scream or move...

The I broke out of it, and couldn't go to sleep.

I've not had hallucinations from it, but sometimes I get extreme night terrors and start freaking the fuck out and running all over the place in my sleep.

Yes Lizzardis I've heard of this technique. It works for me but not entirely. I stop feeling my body after about 15 minutes but I can still move all of my limbs if I want to (of course I don't though). I guess it feels a bit weird but nothing special. I don't see why I should be paralized...It just doesn't work for me.

If your having night terrors too, then I would go and see a Doctor. If you have not seen anything such as a horror movie before you go to sleep, you should not get them.

Along with the sleep paralysis, AND the night terrors....I think your brain is trying to tell you something. It can't hurt to go and see the doctor.

Yeah, it doesn't work for everybody, since everyone is different it would take more or less for your body to fall asleep.

However, its nice to feel nothing....Strictly speaking of course, only for about 2 minutes do you feel nothing, as then you either fall asleep or you HAVE to move.

I'm scared of trying it myself, as I have a fear of being paralysed. Either just my legs or my whole body. I get to the stage where I can't feel anything, and its nice....Then I get scared and panic and move out of my position.

1) How would you know she is "prannging" out? She can't move. She can't let you know that she is paralysed.
2) What the hell is "Prannging"?

It is? So does that mean that people like myself who don't suffer from it....Are not normal? Or do you mean that its normal to suddenly get sleep paralysis?

The most important question is; What causes sleep paralysis? I really have no clue but almost anything can affect you to get it, and i somehow imagine that drugs (alcohol too) can bring forth that. I have never had a sleep paralysis in my life. I don't know why that is but I live a healthy life style toh... I'm just throwing thoughts.

Nobody knows.....

The truth is, nobody really knows what causes sleep paralysis (SP). Everybody has their opinions though, from demons and aliens to malnutrition and too much TV.

Who told you you were normal? :P But seriously, all Sleep Paralysis is, is when you wake up too fast and your mind is awake but your body is still asleep, thus you can't move. It's very terrifying from what I have experienced; you feel like you're being held down, and you could even hear/see things. One time, I woke up and had it and I heard people talking and laughing in my room. Was very scary

I have sleep paralysis but it's normally when I'm trying to wake myself up instead of falling back asleep and it doesn't last 10 minutes.
