Now that I'm no longer a student I'm starting my pretentious quest to become a Waitrose clubcard weilding, organic food munching big issue purchasing cunt. So I started looking into (by which I mean I watched a 1 hour TV program on BBC 3) the quality of the cheap food stuffs I enjoyed as a student.

Some of that stats based on the Food Standards Agency (in Britain, im sure septic tanks and kangaroo rapists will have different standards) are pretty disturbing.

A Beef Burger must contain at least 62% Beef, unless economy is stated in the product name in which case the percentage can be lowered to 47%. However "Beef" in this context is a pretty vague term. The Cheeks (facial sadly) and Heart tend to be among the favoured cuts used for your standard economy burger along with various cuts of fat, connective tissue and sinew. The rest will usually comprise of Bran and Soya flour which will allow the mixture to absorb and hold more water, and the chems.

Hot Dogs are technically 0% Meat, Meat Products. They typically comprise of around 40% MRM; Mechanically Recovered Meat, it was decided some years ago that this stuff is so differing to actual meat that it cant legally be sold as meat. Since Hot Dog as a brand name is Carte Blanche manufacturers have no obligations in terms of what they actually put in so Mechanically Seperated Turkey is a popular choice as it is the cheapest. If you check the packaging of Hotdogs you'll see the "MRM or MSM" stated in the ingredients opposed to actual meat.

Chicken Nuggets and Kievs: Generous firms around the globe target britains low income earners with their goods. EU legislation also greatly helps as it is cheaper to grow battery hens in Brazil, Slaughter Salt and Freeze them before exporting to Holland where they can be defrosted injected with water and then exported on too brtain for processing into a variety of chicken shaped products. Frozen salted meats are taxed at a fairly minute fraction of that of fresh produce.

A Chicken Kiev could legally contain less than 10% chicken as Kiev doesn't legally hold rights to what a Chicken Kiev should contain in the same way that Italy doesnt legally have rights to control what a Pizza should actually contain,

.......After finding all this stuff out, I still enjoy a good spam sandwich spam comming in at over 60% Pork!

Pfft. Horseshit technicalities with regards to what is 'classed' as meat doesn't change the biological make-up of it. Meat is meat; the rest is just petty pencil-pushing. If I wanted pretentious standards on what goes into my food, I wouldn't be eating burgers and hotdogs, would I?

lawlz facts and figures

How about this, if there is less then 33% of meat in a sausage you can't sell it as a sausage, you'll have to give it a different name - something like a 'banger' or "newgrounds animal rod'.

Wow, I guess I'm going to think higher of McDonald's from now on, because every container of burgers says it has 100% beef. I had no idea there were things that were only 62% beef, or even 0% meat. I'm scared of hot dogs now.

fat, connective tissue and sinew.

A good Lamb shank contains all of these things, and is delicious. All meat is disgusting if you look into it too much.

Mechanically Recovered Meat is surely stretching the boundaries a bit. After the usual methods of removing meat from a carcass are complete the carcass is passed through a series of mesh at high pressure, the resulting product being mangled bone and a viscous paste whose appearance is more similar to dog shite than beef, pork or whatever the animal was. On top of that this animal milkshake will still make up for less than 50% of the hotdog. I linked the process in action on my OP.

f I wanted pretentious standards on what goes into my food, I wouldn't be eating burgers and hotdogs, would I?

I eat 100% Beef burgers and MRM free hotdogs because I'm no longer a peasant student and can afford to fork out for the better brands. I even own a mincer so I can DIY it on the burger front.

Its not meat if it's not edible - all be it the stuff is edible once passed at high pressure through a series of meshes as part of a mechanical process to remove it from the bone and then processed with the addition of soya flour and bran along with water falvourings and beaver jizz.

The bones might be edible if ground to a powder and added to flour to make bread, therefore can we call the bones meat as well?

Actually, no, it's not.

It doesn't matter how mashed to fuck it is, the biochemical constitution of meat is the same. Granted, the proportions of different parts (connective tissue, fat, muscle etc.) are different, but all those parts are still just as edible as if they were in a 'normal' piece of meat.

The act of eating meat (or anything) involves chewing it up and then chemically breaking it down in your stomach to a soup far more dissociated than MRM standards, regardless of what the meat started out looking like. Ergo; it doesn't matter what state you eat it as, it's going to end up a lot less like meat by the time it reaches your small intestine (the 1st place in your digestive system where nutritional content actually starts to matter).

When you get down to the details, it all ends up the same regardless.

The "biochemical constiution" of a cows cock and balls is also the same but that wouldnt make me refer to it as Beef.

This also reminds me of sometimes when I buy cheese products, it says 100% cheese. It was kind of scary, as I wondered what other companies used as opposed to cheese. Again, I'm really glad I look at the labels.
