Of course they did. All the water was contaminated by bacteria and disease. Beer and ale was the only other option of drink. When the original settlers came to America they underestimated alcohol. They drank it relatively strong and they would drink so much they'd die in ditches. You could see bloated and puke covered pilgrims for miles.
