I've just admitted what few will. I follow stereotypes almost religiously. Day in and day out I label new people I see like animals, cells, or a strain of the flu, not as actual humans. I use terms like goths, emos, skaters, preps, "gagstas", sluts, and more every day. I would consider carrying a descriptive encyclopedia around with me and study the subjects like a field scientist.

Why? Look around you. Our world is defined by stereotypes. Everything is owned by Pepsi and Coke. It's not cool to be yourself and be different these days. Instead, you're expected to ignore your uniqueness and fall into a random clique that most likely is not even close to who you really are. Teenagers are even encouraged to abandon their true beings and jump on a bandwagon.

Call me heartless, call me inaccurate, call me lazy and uneducated, it doesn't matter. Sure, hiding beneath designer clothes, Hot Topic makeup, and certain music there are people that fit well into the category or group but yet their persona shines. Do I have time to go around and check to see if every teen I see isn't completely brainwashed and mindless by mass media? No.

tl;dr - Kids these days follow stereotypes because they think it's the right thing to do, stereotyping them is easy and most of the time quite accurate.

I believe you. Stereotypes are amazingly accurate. In fact, there's even a stereotypical Newgrounder, and I just happen to be one of them!

i only read about half of your topic, because not being funny, but bring me a person is wester civilization whos never used a term like "emo" or "goth" or "gangsta" or "slut" and ill show you a pink dog doing back flips.

we all stereotype people, and not being funny, but who actually fucking cares? most people would call me an emo. but im not bothered, becaue A, im not emo and B i wont ever hold a proper conversation with so people, so what is it to me?

sterotypes arent the problem, its people juding others based on those sterotypes thats creates issues

for the lulz

If children want to group together and be souless, then okay. Their children will be the ones to re-learn originality.

They try, but fail miserably, and fall into a stereotype themselves. They're unaware that by being random and hardcore and different (their own pathetic versions of the terms, of course) they're just labeling themselves, which makes it even easier for me.

This is an interesting thought, although I personally think that originality will be swept from the world as robots and artificial intelligence are accepted into society in the future. Not to mention there will also be cameras everywhere.

If you really think that people fall into stereotypes without exception, then you're wrong. The only person putting them there is the beholder, and the beholder can't possibly know everything about the people that they're lumping together.

Some people DO willingly conform to a stereotype, but that's usually due to insecurity. Leave them alone.

I'm proud to say that I don't fall into any category. Normally I would say I'm a non-conformist, but then I would sound like an emo kid.

Yeah, they're mostly stereotypes because they have an element of truth. Do all emos cut themselves? No. Is cutting a common enough behavior among emos, at least when compared to its rate among the general population, that it's safer to assume an emo is a cutter than not? Yes. Of course, if a person manages to interest me personally despite being a part of a certain group, I'll get to know them a bit better, but yeah, most people have a stereotype, and most stereotypes have an element of truth.

I was one of the few who didn't fit a stereotype. I wasn't a jock, a prep, an emo, a wigga, a goth, or anything else. Well, except "the loner", who had some "nerd" elements but didn't even fit in with them.

Right, but when everyone's doing it, then being yourself and unique for the sake of self-fufillment is more or less painting a societal target on your nutsack.

I'm the same way. I have several qualities from each group. That's why I have a wide range of friends that have different personalities. I know these screamo kids and even though they listen to shitty watered down "metal" and wear gauges they're cool and funny. The first time I saw them I dismissed them as fags. I got to know them and we're all close friends now. They're more than just the stereotype, they are still individuals, and I'm sure they really do like that style, I guess.

That's the root of the problem. It's not your obligation or your job to go around and judge people. Even if you were right 99% of the time it's still pointless to judge other people unless you care more about feeling like you know everything than actually trying to obtain knowledge.

I dunno about all this. I mean... yes, people follow trends... it sucks... but every kid will take models before building up is own personnality...
It just sucks that a lot of people get stucked at this point and stop evolving in something better.
It's not bad to share similarities in your clothing with a group of persons. I like wearing band t-shirts not becaue I'm following some metalhead trends, but because I like to show my appreciation of this band's music and artworks.

It's not bad to fit in a group, but don't change what you really are to fit in a group, find a group that fits you instead. You can still be true to yourself.

You talk about cliques and such? Well, I'm your average american teenager, and I don't follow any real clique. I have friends that have hair down past their shoulders and wear black clothes and such, and I also have friends that wear designer clothes. Some of my friends are gay, and others extremely homophobic. I base friendships off of personalities and how a person acts, not how a they dress. Although I do tend to talk to people that don't conform to the typical lifestyle of what's expected from teenagers these days. But that doesn't mean I don't give other people a chance. If someone's acting like a complete douche in class, I'm not really going to try and talk to them. But that's just human nature really. First impressions of the person's personality is what you should base your friendships off of, not the appearance of that person.
