"Original" my ass!

This is from an ad right here on NG, proclaiming the Evangelion 1.0: You Are (Not) Alone DVD as "The Rebuild of the Original Giant Robot Anime". You'd think an anime distributor would know better than to call Evangelion the "original giant robot anime", which effectively proclaims that the genre began in 1995. I mean, fuck, you're telling me these guys never heard of Gundam? Or Macross? And there were others before them.

Now don't get me wrong, I have no problem with Evangelion. Mind you I prefer its polar opposite Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, that one has more action and less bogus symbolism, but Evangelion is far from bad in my own opinion. But claiming that it's the original anime to feature giant robots? I call bullshit of the highest degree!

Well, it's original in certain ways. Every anime is. And to call it original is better than calling it unoriginal. But every anime also copies something from another. In my opinion, they are ALL the same. Especially giant robot anime.

But I'm not a huge fan of it. And never got into Evangelion.

Well...I take that back. You interpret it the show as you will, but it was incredibly different for the time it was released.

THAT'S why they're saying it's "The Original Giant Robot Anime" ...they're not saying it's "The First Giant Robot Anime" or "The Only Giant Robot Anime That Matters"

Neon Genesis Evangelion was meant to be a serious take on the mecha anime genre. The reason it is so highly reverred is that it's supposed to be a deconstructive take on a genre, and it probably is in fact the most popular mecha anime out there, although Gundam may in fact be more popular. I'm probably just saying that because I'm a fan of NGE and not of Gundam anyway. Gurren Lagann was meant to be a reconstruction of the mecha anime genre.

Exactly! In fact, NGE and Watchmen are two of my favorite series and they have a lot in common. Did anybody else think Dr. Manhattan was kind of like Rei? You know, with being stoic, making more of himself/herself, being the only non-human in the squad, being giant and naked?
