Every gamer has their favorite platforming game. They all range in many different ways, but through years of playing some great platforming games I've discovered a formula to creating an epic platforming game. I might be wrong on this, but I think I'm on to something here. Think about it. What do Super Mario 64, Donkey Kong 64, Glover 64, Banjo Kazooie, and more all have in common?

-Silly but loveable characters (Mario, Banjo & Kazooie, DK Crew, Yoshi, Klungo, etc)

-One big 3-D world that has smaller worlds or levels you unlock by collecting items and acquiring special moves (paintings in Super Mario 64, puzzles in Banjo & Kazooie, portals in Glover, etc)

-Lots of item collecting, usually involving one type of coin (or banana, gram, etc) in levels that are sprawled out all over the place and when enough are gained grant you a larger item that unlocks new worlds and is key to beating the game (stars, golden bananas, jiggies, etc) (also to be noted are items like the 8 red coins or jingos to collect in each world to get a bigger item)

-One big boss that contorted usually peaceful land and manipulated normal characters into enemies and goons and scattered items across the game (Gruntilda, Bowser, the alligator dude in DK, the evil glove in Glover, Dr. Eggman, etc)

There are many more things I could put down, but these are the significant points. What do you guys think? Do you see how these games are built and constructed, and what makes them loveable, challenging, addicting, and most of all unforgettable?

Personally I prefer 2D platformers like old Marios, DK Country (all of them), Sonic (all of the old Genesis ones and the Sonic Advance series), Rocket Knight Adventures, Earthworm Jim, Castlevania series, Metroid series, Mega Man series, and the list goes on.

To me, the reason to their sucess is, they're all simple (except Castlevania), they're easy to pick up, they have a bunch of secrets that make you feel good when you accomplish them, they have cool power-ups, the levels are unique, and everyone plays them which makes them fun to talk about with other people.

Platformers are probably the most basic, well-known, and popular games and they're highly sucessful. Think about it, what are always known as the best games in history?

Garuntee you most people will say:
Mario
Sonic
Mega Man
Metroid
DK Country

I agree mostly here, however, there's something else:

- World Variety, making everything look the same is the easiest way to ensure a bad score, Banjo Kazooie/Tooie, DK 64, and Mario 64 are all known for their well inspired world design, BT brought some worlds to the table that were never considered before, or, well, not considered in the way it was done.

- A wealth of moves, nobody wants to keep jumping eternally, Bottles/Jamjars the mole or those signs in Super Mario 64 made you know the amount of moves you had at your disposal.

- Variety in acquiring the oh so sacred item, just getting from point A to point B for every single Jiggie/Star/Banana would be horrendously boring, instead, you get penguin races, FPS segments, and other awesome stuff that's awesome.

- You want to hate the evil person, Gruntilda is one of my most hated final bosses, she's just, well, BAD, there's no good side to her. I mean, anybody who's willing to kidnap a kid, or try to steal the life force from an island is somebody that deserves the worst of the worst. Not to mention, that son of a bitch Bowser, you need a boss battle that's WORTH fighting.

It's the only way out!

Castlevania is more of an adventure game.

The problem with your assessment is...

...The best platform game in existence doesn't follow that formula.

Platformer games are the best!
i can never get enough of games like Crash Bandicoot, Croc, Spyro, Rayman, (all for the PS1)
and Ratchet & Clank, Jak & Daxter, Sly Cooper... (all for the PS2)

of course Nintendo also have some good platformers, like Mario 64, Donkey Kong, Metroid, but Playstation have the best one.

some of the things i think a platformer game must have is a cool character, many things to collect, power ups, cool bosses, good stages/missions and sometimes it can be a huge free world even though i prefere small stages like in Crash Bandicoot...

Unless you get a game over that winds up with you getting a funny feeling in your bathing suit area.

Simplicity
- It shouldn't be hard to play. Everybody should be able to pick it up and just figure out how to play it without needing a tutorial or instruction manual. Advanced moves should rarely be required for game completion

Also..

Choosable difficulty.
- The basic game should be fairly easy... but beating it 100% should require far more skill... allowing the player to choose weather or not they feel like mastering a difficult jump, speed run, or insainly difficult level. IE: You don't need all 100+ stars to beat mario... but the option to get all of them is there if you feel up to the challenge.

It's not until you know the games by heart that you can pick away at the fibers of their construction. Hating the final boss, and the varied missions or objectives that were added are other good and true qualities that most of these games have in common. The games were repetitive, but they followed a simplistic but easily adaptable and loveable formula. I'm going to add some more.

-Each game has a roster of moves and combos, some of which must be unlocked or discovered and help you get to other places and beat certain bosses and complete objectives.

-Collecting enough of the big item (aka bananas, jiggies, stars, etc) unlocks new worlds and more areas of the big world that contains the levels (castle, gruntilda's lair, the dk island, etc)

-The games promise playing as more than one character, the only one that doesn't is Super Mario 64 but there was a rumor that you could unlock Luigi for quite some time. On Banjo Kazooie you turn into animals, on DK you can choose from the crew, and so on.

Another thing I loved about old platformers like Crash and Spyro:

-Have a certain type of collectable that's challenging to get, but pays you off with an extra world/level in the end. These items always made me eager to get 100% completion in the game, to unlock all of the bonus content in that secretive box o' goodies.

Thanks aplenty to Phobotech for the great user icon.

A classic platformer has to have those hard bits that make you GAME OVER again and again, make you rage on the inside and almost makes you throw the controller at your poor cat.

Haha, yes! I forgot about this! Also all platformers have secret random and weird items that are hard to obtain and they do nothing, or they're just rumors to get awesome stuff.

But yet, you can't turn it off, because you love the game. That's most frustrating.

Yeah...I think the jumping makes up about 2% of the total gameplay, if that.
