So presonus just released a new DAW called Studio One, and I was wondering if people are gonna get it, have it, or are gonna pass. I think it looks pretty clean and workable, but since I'm new to this audio production thing I have to know what you people think.
Here's the site: http://www.presonus.com/products/Softwar eDetail.aspx?SoftwareId=11

The 'artist' edition ($250) doesn't support 3rd party plugins, if I'm reading the features list correctly. The 'pro' version is ($450)
Wait a minute:
Free jambalaya recipe!
I'm sold.

Yeah I was sold on that line to lol. But in all seriousness, I didn't know that it doesn't allow third party plugins... that sucks. Well its only version 1.0, so they'll probably fix that feature sooner or later.

I bet they'd rather charge $200 for it.

I bet they would change it, especially since its just starting. Customer support is fabulous there though, I found this out by roaming the forums there.

Whoopie-doo. Another bloated daw that probably handles multi-core like crap and then costs $250 for a base version that doesn't even support 3rd party plugins?? WTF? Is this like 1985 or something?
For god's sake Presonus, don't pull this "this is the DAW to kill all DAWs" bullcrap and then offer some crippled entry level version for 3 times what a comparable product sells for (FL Studio) which already has tons more support and built-in plugins. Really, did someone forget to do their market research? Oooo, I bet they did...
It's going to have about the same life span as say Project 5, which was born amid some oblique and abstract claim to brilliance due to a slightly different way it handled workflow without actually having any defining changes to general DAW funtion and then die amid a lack of continued drive and general public apathy for yet "another generic pretty looking 64 bit DAW". Has no-one learned their lesson?
I wonder if they realize they have to compete against reaper which is going to make their job pretty tough to begin with. At least it won't take them more than a year or two to realize that they made a mistake staking the big bucks on "comprehensive undo" (OMG!! undo!! holy SH*T!! is that even possible!?!?) and "Native Plugins and More" and their own hardware integration for midi controllers. Holy crap, how amazingly mediocre.
Here's where I insert the facepalm emoticon and post some quippy remark about Presonus being conceited.

I remember, back when I was a kid, we had 16 tracks of midi, a two line LCD display, 10 seconds of sampling time and 6 voice polyphony. And we LOVED it. None of this "multicore", "unlimited tracks", "elastic audio", "virtual instrument" baloney!
And we had to hike 15 kilometres, barefoot in the snow to the closest music store. And we LOVED it!!! None of this fangdangled "internet download", "e-transfer", "crossgrade" mumbo jumbo.

They had that back then? Wow, that must be awesome, cuz I still can't figure out what my FL Studio can do. Seriously, what I've been missing out on. I do have a question though, was that a gold mine in your day?

I've used this for a few months, it was easy to use. But not very in depth. There was something about it that I didn't like, I can't remember what, i think it was something like automation...
It's not worth it for the price, when you've got software like Cubase or nuendo out there, even sonys old acid was better, i thought.

I do not have Studio One.
But, it's understandable that PreSonus would get into the business of DAW creation. They produce the best FireWire interfaces I've yet seen and are Digidesign's only real competition in the mid-end market. The fact that Studio One has been touted as a very sleek, very intuitive DAW with all of the bells and whistles you'd expect from any other DAW in the same price band in every magazine in the industry seems to me to point towards a possibly longer shelf life than the average "We wanted to leap into the DAW industry!" software corporation attempt at making money. That said, I am interested in checking it out simply because I am in the market for a 10/10 FireWire interface and if Studio One would be better integrated with a PreSonus interface than other DAWs then by all means, I would use it if for no other reason than to record with. As for Multi-core handling, Studio One is purported to be at the top-end on that specific criteria.
But, what I find funny is how everyone believes Reaper is a lion-killer of a DAW. Reaper has done nothing but crash on both my laptop and my desktop since it's initial release up to around 4 months ago when I finally stopped bothering to update and see if it would work. Same goes for Krystal and to a certain extent Live Lite 4. All have some issues with their acceptance of 3rd party plugins and repeatedly crashing when they scan my plugin folder and find a random plugin (often times a side-chain capable compressor seems to be the culprit) that they do not want to work with. I'm tired of the comparisons between Reaper and every other DAW as if Reaper has set the bar when, in reality, it is yet another in a long line of good DAWs with another 3-5 years of bug finding ahead of it before it becomes stable enough for me to trust.
Don't get me wrong, the buddies I have who use Reaper laud it's abilities, but even they have stability issues when loading CPU intensive mixing and mastering tools. Even Sonar has made me unhappy recently because my Sonalksis plugs do NOT get along with it, and the same could be said of Reaper when I have been able to get it to stay open long enough to test it. I simply do not believe that Reaper is going to be the deciding factor in whether Studio One or other DAWs live or die. No, I believe the more set-in-stone mid-range DAWs like Cubase, Sonar, and Live will determine Studio One's fate.

I agree with Ingenious that Studio One will probably will have a long shelf life since it's from Presonus, and they will probably improve the features to be better suited for musicians and producers alike.
