Yeah, that happened to me once. Followed some weird links, and eventually got to some scary beastiality site, which spawned like, 500 popups. Some of the imagery is still sticking in my head, every fucking time I close my eyes.

i just tried it in internet explorer. i was expecting pop-ups everywhere and a computer crash. instead i only got 1 pop-up which is kinda weird.

Probably a bad idea. I went to the site and just for tits and giggles, opened the pop up. Then I got a warning from my antivirus program.

Well when firefox blocked it the site probably attempted to give you a pop-up multiple times. Since you got the pop-up the site didn't need to send anymore.
