Ever since we got user pages with Google's contextual ads in them, taking into account the type of content we put on our pages, there are bound to be a few ads that make you chuckle, frown or have some other such bodily reaction.

Fart joke.

I took a screenshot of the ad that triggered my creation of this thread, as you'll see below. This raised the following question in my mind:
If you had Parkinson's or some other sort of crippling disease with no known (western) cure, would you risk going to China for an experimental treatment?

I know a lot of people oppose stem cell research, so i'll ask you to see the ad as a mere example and focus on the question (note the absence of a mention of stem cell research in there, i'm talking about general medical breakthroughs). I'm sure you can find a thread in the Politics forum if you're feeling particularly elephants-vs-donkeys today.

I thought that when you sign up for newgrounds you pretty much consent to hosting an ad on your page.

The best advertisement I have ever gotten, was during stickam, when Cast was showing a movie.

I agree, I'd rather have ads on my page than see Newgrounds close due to lack of funds.

Back on topic though, I rarely ever look at the adverts on my user page. But now you've mentioned it. Maybe I will to see if any gems come up.

No, I would not.
Won't trust an internet ad to help me cure an uncureable disease.

Yeah, thanks for that. However nobody has answered my question yet =C

That's exactly the premise here. What if you heard (disregarding that it was an ad) of a somewhat credible attempt at a cure for an "uncurable disease", would you risk it, knowing that the country it originated from has a not-perfect reputation for human rights\health care?

In a word: no. Only if I was about to die anyway, and didn't have anything to leave the money to, would I even consider it. If they really did have a way to cure something that's been defeating modern medicine for decades, it'd be all over the damn news and scientific community (*coughsouthkoreacough*). Almost all of these so-called 'experimental' cures from the far east turn out to be hoaxes, aimed at fleecing rich, desperate idiots.

Of course, if it WAS proven to work, or even if it was likely to work (like a stem cell trial in the UK / USA), then yeah, why not. However, things like that advert, which look too good to be true, always are.

That's the kind of desperation i'm talking about. I think i would try even if i did have someone to leave the money to.

Nope. Blogged about a bunch of ways you can use your PC to kill time while helping good causes, one of which was dedicating your PC's unused processing cycles to help research a long list of diseases (cancer, Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, ALS, etc).

I probably would. I don't see anything wrong with this. But I would be worried about it being a scam.

Google ads are never very intelligent, my friend was doing research for teen pregnancy and she got an ad for e-bay advocating that they sold teen pregnancy.

Last time I bought teen pregnancy, I got arrested by the cops and now I'm a registered sex offender.

According to a bunch of know-nothing hippies and vegans, it counts as killing babies or some shit.

I love how there's no percieved difference between a baby and a ball of cells, in their minds.
