Have you guys noticed the similarities between the two states of New Jersey and California?

Holy crap. They're like brothers.

Both states have prominent boardwalks, NJ having several and CA's best known in Santa Cruz. Both states are very culturally diverse, having all types of ethnicities. Both states really enjoy apple juice, and pineapples. Both are very dense states, even though CA is very wide, but the metro areas are very dense! In a CNN article, an article about gang problems mentioned from "Oakland to Newark" referring to a CA and NJ city, which are both considered gang-plagued.
