I'd have thought, since Atheism is rooted firmly in the camp of scientifically proven theories, that ghosts would be pretty out of their belief system?
That means Atheism is a religion. Thing is, science, governments, and religions are all belief systems, and all of them eat our society to its core. Communism tried to eliminate that threat by opposing religion, but it was about as pointless as creating a law against laws.
Science and religion are basically the same. Science is about exploring what we don't know and proving or disproving it, while religion is a bit more passive and a bit less logical while still dealing with what we don't know. Sadly, most modern scientists are uninterested in proving anything so much as they are in disproving it.
The big problem here is that the definition of an Atheist is a bit sketchy. The dictionary says about Atheism:
atheist - someone who denies the existence of god
But how do we define God? Most people define God as a form of consciousness, while others think of it as an unintelligent mass of whatever that creates. I define God as being the sum of all matter and energy, which would include us (which would also mean that God is not a form of life).
This discussion can't come to an end until we can properly define Atheism, but people won't stop arguing over that so I'm guessing you probably won't get your answer.
