Has anyone heard about Reeses Pieces have maggots in them? I overheard my friends grandma talk about it. I did a Google search and some people claim to have eaten them. Have you ever had an experience with food with bugs in them?

All the factory candy you eat contain bugs. When they're alive though, that's gross.

This is pure, assisted self-destruction

I meant to mention that when we confronted them, they sent us coupons for free Campbell's soup!

Yummy!

Sure, some factories might turn a blind eye to a few bugs here and there, but you'd think they'd do the best they can to remove them. One time I found some kind of string in a can of chicken noodle soup. I can only guess it was a feather or something that wasn't removed and cot cut up.

No, I've never got "lucky" in that domain. But a friend of mine found a small rat in a pastry puff years ago. My uncle found a large bolt (I know, it's not as bad as a damn bug, but it wasn't supposed to be there at all) in a slice of cake a few weeks ago.
And to add this just for fun, the instruction booklet for my Ethernet NIC card has a squished bug on one of the pages, embedded in the paper and glossed over. Also, a Tuborg brewery in Romania received several complaints of "funny-tasting beer" - quite expectable, taking into account the brewery was situated right next to a cemetery, and was drawing groundwater straight from under the area.

there are certain types of cheese matured to the point where they get maggots- apparently these maggots add extra protein, and taste like the cheese that they're in.

I've heard a story about a bandaid found in a Charleston Chew - that's about it.

Personally, I've never experienced any bugs in my food (that I've noticed, at least). I'm pretty glad of that too. Finding a bug in my food would completely alter my opinion of all foods - I would approach each bite with a certain trepidation, the fear of an insect ever-present in the back of my mind.

My entire life would be changed for the worse...

That's a funny thing about basically ANY company. Bitch and they'll give you free stuff / discounts.

I once wrote to a company that made frozen burritos because the package contained "not the bountiful ten burritos as advertised and as hoped for, but a paltry, sadness-inducing nine burritos" and they sent me a crapload of buy-one-get-one-free coupons that I never actually used cuz their burritos tasted like doody in a tortilla blanket.

I'm so glad the "candy" I eat comes from nature (apples, bananas, oranges, etc)

When I was a young boy my father, I mean I drank some soda that had a large carpenter ant in it. I spit it out and the ant was fine. But since then I have never been able to leave a beverage unattended for any amount of time and if the liquid is not translucent, I have to watch it closely as it is being poured.

And when I eat apples I have to either cut them up or eat them very cautiously, watching for any signs of bugs.

The food and drug administration has deemed mass-produced consumer food items as safe to eat provided they have an acceptable percent of non-toxic contaminants in them. Insects, a worker's finger or hand, etc. are all considered acceptable ingredients if they constitute below a certain percentage in the overall batch.

Why? Because they don't pose any sort of realistic health risk to the general population. Food is processed to eliminate bacterial or viral contaminants before being shipped to stores.

I'm comfortable with it, especially since Reeses is the only candy worth eating. This one time though, I opened a fig newton and observed a live maggot on it writhing just in time to spare an untimely demise via incisor. My inability to eat another fig newton since is just an added bonus. Stupid youngness and susceptibility to trauma. >: (

A Fingernail in an orange opal fruit (or starburst for you whippersnappers) was the worst I've ever had in this respect. Maggots though would be pretty disgusting.

A while ago I had a large box of Nerds I was working on throughout the night. I went to bed, and when I awoke I grabbed to box and poured the rest of it into my mouth, just to end up spitting out about 3 or 4 live ladybugs. That was pretty gross.

That's exactly what I mean haha - that sucks!

I would HATE to be completely paranoid and have to carefully inspect the food or beverage I'm having. In fact, even reading all of these stories is giving me the willies, so I'm going to leave now.

The last time I looked at some statistics, it said that the average candy bar has eight (or was it three?) insect legs in it, so I'm not sure if you're talking about an entire maggot (I hope not!) or just a small part of it, not that maggots even have legs. This is pretty disturbing, as Reese's is my favorite movie theater candy.
