OK! This is just awful what is going on with the ap!?

I hear so many good songs being uploaded but they never ever reach top 5!
Instead I hear music on the top 5 that is simply there because the person asked a bunch of people to vote 5 on his/her song! WTF?!

Why can't you people here vote on all the songs you listen to? You don't even have to be logged in! When you listen to a song, listen to the whole thing, then vote. People work too damn hard on their music just for someone to click on the song and skip to the middle and then not even get a vote.
It doesn't matter if you think that song sucks, vote on it still! It's people who don't vote that let crappy songs get on the top 5. Oh, and one last thing, do not vote 5 just because you know that person or think he/she is awesome!...I've seen this happen more than enough times. Just because the person is famous on newgrounds, doesnt mean he/she should get 5'ed. This is just another "celebrity" thing. Very hard working people should be on the top 5. I know producers on here that have been making music for many years and they are very good. Their music is unique and they have talent. Just because you put 4 kicks on a beat and add a open highhat to every off beat and add some random arp, doesnt mean you deserve so much attention. We have people with real skill with pianos and are uploading hard worked songs and you just skip through the song and don't even vote. Hell, the producers are lucky to even receive your stupid "zero bombs" but wow... how useful is that?

-End of rant, and no, i'm not talking about me. I can't produce for shit. But I hear songs that deserve to be heard.

See this 14 year old kid spaz out thinking he's some sort of gangsta...lol.

I've pretty much decided that anybody who is serious about music needs to stop wasting their time with the newgrounds audio portal.

there are plenty of 100% music forums with serious people talking seriously about serious music.
sometimes xD
Muzicforums, Musicbante, and AMF (dunno what it stands for) are the big ones

but i wouldn't be to worried about getting high ratings, the point of NG as far as i know is to have audio, video, and all that stuff all together all in one place. so dont get down if your song is down. it's like trying to win... that isn't the point. if your trying to use NG to promo yourself and get big, your hopelessly lost.

peace, the doc.

So, in other words... you're the master of doing nothing.

and don't forget the good old-fashioned youtube and myspace. a friend of mine told me he listens to several bands who got big entirely through those websites.

I think the problem is in the nature of the AP's past in comparison to it's present and future. The AP was created to give CC licensed music for flash games and videos and thus to curb Flash artists from using copywritten music sources. But, for that to truly happen and for the AP to have held onto that ideal would've taken actually upholding the line and banning Flash artists who do use copywritten music. Same goes for the Art Portal, which as I've seen it appears to be for Flash artists to find visual artists to draw for their flash releases rather than using copywritten images, sprites, etc. Yet again, though, there will be absolutely no follow-through on the "upholding the laws laid out" end of the deal and thus, like the Audio Portal, the Art portal will evolve into something different. Which is where we are now.

The Audio portal is no longer truly a place where artists release music for Flash usage. Just take 45 seconds in the Hip-Hop portal to see that, or the Goth portal, or the Miscellaneous portal, or any portal where 75% or more of the music therein could not be used in a Flash short of some form of Surrealist interpretation. The Audio Portal now is a place to release music, get fans, get reviews, get votes, and/or make an ass of oneself. We have only to look as far as ParagonX9 to see most (or all, depending on whether you know Paragon is a hot asian woman or not) of those things in action.

I think we spend too much time imagining the AP as what it once was meant to be rather than looking forward and trying to develop it into what it should be: a place to fine-tune your skills as a musician, producer, and/or artist. Frankly, even the Flash portal has become nothing more than a stopover for flash artists until they a) are picked up for sponsorship, b) are picked up by a game development company, or c) are picked up for flash design of websites or other media. Why should the AP be any different?

I think what the AP needs is to be on even footing with the Flash portal as far as promotion, revenue, and administration goes. That means all the BS "updates" we've been expecting since '05 should have been done. That means giving mods the ability to ban/unban users, giving our Front Page the same care and updates that the Flash FP has gotten, updating the look of the AP, and last, but not least, going after the few Flash artists who have used Audio from our portal in their flash pieces and been PAID for said pieces but have never entered into any agreement with the audio provider to share the revenue. That's a sticking point that I have because if you're going to claim the audio portal was created to rid the flash portal of copywritten, and thus NOT PAID FOR music, then how can you totally overlook and do nothing about flash artists who are sponsored by any of the big-name sponsoring websites and development companies who are knowingly breaking CC licensing and not negotiating with audio artists?

But I digress, yes there are alot of inequalities on the AP, but I have to agree that the voting and top 5 really are the least of our worries. Top 5 only means your song will draw 0's for the next 7 straight days and end up being on the bottom 5 by the end of that time. Top 30 means pretty much the same, except sometimes worse even because haters truly despise anyone getting top 30. And there are no audio development companies looking at NG's audio portal for new talent like flash developers do the flash portal, which is actually interesting considering how important sound is to giving a game emotional and psychological weight. And we have alot of talented composers, artists and producers here who actually could score games and movies quite easily. Too bad they aren't being scouted on NG so they could produce more revenue for the owners of the site when they say "I was discovered on NewGrounds.com by XXXXXX gaming company! You should check it out....and click alot of ads while you're there!" I wonder if anyone in power at NG has ever even thought clearly about that kind of power?

Lots of great insight as usual ingenius. I was hoping to pull some of that talent out into the open with the spotlight idea I posted about a week ago, but the community motivation to do such a thing seems to be lacking.

The spotlight idea is good, but i don't see it happening because of the level of apathy here in the forums. I read the topic and saw the usual "This has been suggested" replies and pretty much figured out that your thread was on a slow spiral downwards. I'd say a better idea is to go out on your own and find the people to do it, set it up in newsposts, have the users who join you advertise to their buddies in their respective genres, etc. etc. Most of what works now on the AP is grassroots because there is really no motivation anymore. Half of the best posters on NG leave every 6 months.

The people with the highest caliber of knowledge on mixing, mastering, producing, playing instruments, etc. seem to waft in and then disappear after a year or so. We have a great core group now I think with sorohanro, nathanallenpinard, nav, nal, etc. but I'm sure alot of these will move on like the ones before them. Likewise, older posters with alot of info. like Rig and Rucklo are rarely involved in the discussions that I feel could most benefit their particular expertise and knowledge since I believe both are going to school for engineering or some form of audio knowledge degree.

I'm sure that all of the posers who have slowed on their posting are like myself, and do what they can but really do not have the time to devote to a "review crew" or a group of any nature really. I mostly stick to posting on threads that I think can use my help or answering private messages from users needing help, but otherwise with a 9-to-5 job, a studio and the other aspects of life away from NG, I don't really have the disposable time that some of the younger NG members do.

Right. How many similar threads have we had by now?
How many times has been linked to the appropriate threads? How many times have even regs continued to ramble on about it? Too many times to count.

This - Zerovoting and exposure
and
This - Ideas for Newgrounds' evolution Mk3

I agree that we can use some change on the AP, but ranting about it here for the 9 millionth time isn't going to help. Good day.

No no no you guys got it wrong, the real problem is that it is possible for people with no musical insight whatsoever to vote on music, this is not a problem with a solution but it should tell you that you shouldnt give a s to the t about the portal score system.

Its like a master making an amazing painting and putting it in a giant cage with giraffe's.

the giraffe's dont recognice the art because they have no understanding of art so they headbutt the hell out of the painting, the painting will then lay on the ground ripped to shreds.

When the master see's this, do you think he will decide it was a shit painting?

It's been crappy for years and it'll be like this until Tom starts caring about the AP.

Suggestions and discussions are useless since no admin is taking any action :/

Yep. That's how all the shit stays up top and the good stuff floats to the bottom. People with little talent praising other works of little talent, so that their own works of little talent may receive positive regards as well. Its a nice little imaginary world.

heh...

Imagine, if you will, having a seriously mentally disabled child.
I'm talking full on autism, a touch of schizophrenia and a li'l splash of paranoid delusion on top of a staggeringly deficient IQ.

Let's continue even further along our imaginary path to the day when your kid decides s/he wants to be a theoretical physicist. In the interest of your child's happiness, you might even encourage and support this fantasy with a pat on the head and the occasional "WOW! you sure are smart..."

-=5=-

Even though you will never take this pursuit seriously, you would probably still love this fucked up kid just the same.

Welcome to the AP...

The musical aspect may be fun, but let's not pretend that the AP is a serious forum for those on a path to a career in music.

I see it as more of a safe place to try a few new things and get some feedback from a few like (and as many more not so like) minds. More along the lines of a weekend play/jam session at a friends house than a determined session in a studio.

Take it all with a pound of salt and keep in mind that my opinion along with $2.50 might get me a cup of coffee.
