Hi there, I'm looking for PHP programmers who want to help my team and me out with building a website.
We already have a webdeveloper on board, but he has requested me to go out and look for extra hands.
He has designed the graphics himself, but a dedicated graphic designer would of course help greatly with the look of the site.

It's big, so it will require dedication, the site is already there mostly however, but it still requires work.

The Gig:

Alright, it's incredibly awesome so just take a few breaths... ready...?
Right, me and a team of dedicated people are developing a 3D game, right now we're in the process of building the first playable.
Custom engine, models, sounds, music, etcetera.

We've been at it for a long time and during that time the idea dawned to start a game development portal where anyone who wants to work on a game can find likeminded people, create their own projects, set up a profile and get experience in the field by developing their own game.
Kinda like what we're doing ourselves, but with an emphasis on the sharing of knowledge, building a portfolio and getting first hand experience.

All for free.

This portal will be dedicated to any aspect of gamedevelopment, be it Gamedesign, Modelling, Animation, Programming, Sounddesign, Leveldesign, the works.
You will be able to create a portfolio, add images and files, create a team, add members to your team, keep a blog for updates and more.

It's all a bit under the radar at the moment, but once we get it going it has the potential to become very big.

I can't disclose any details, but you will be informed properly.

The Important Stuff

We're looking for PHP programmers to help and a Graphic Designer to aid with the visual side of the site.

Designer, your role will include to come up with:
- Design Flow (This is a general theme if how things look on every page)
- Colour Schemes
- Elemental ("widgets") Positioning
- Data Presentation (Profile data information styling. Not overloading)
- Format Layout (eg: NG Profile what goes where)

PHPer:
- We are using the latest release of PHP.
- You will work under the supervision of the webdeveloper.

Our primary means of communication is MSN, you'll be expected to be online not only at meetings, but regularly.
We need to be able to communicate about anything at any time. This keeps communication direct, fast and the work gets done quickly.

You'll be working under the webdeveloper I mentioned previously, I'm not a webdev personally (I'm a gamedesigner) so I'm leaving webdevelopment to the Pros.
I do have a leadershipsrole however and I handle everything from PR to planning.

There is no payment involved, this platform and the team behind it are all about the development of games.
Not developing games so you can earn money with it.

You will however be able to work on an extremely cool project, have your name in its credits and you of course have the ability to add it to your own portfolio.

If you're interested, please include prior work in your PM/reply. I prefer PMs though.

Loving games is a big bonus.

Alright, I think I've covered everything. If you have any questions you can post them here or PM me.

Cheers,
RNNR

You may find response limited due to lack of payment, but I'll send you a PM anyway.

Yeah time is money and that wasn't mentioned their! I honestly dont see how this would be any better than gamedev.net which is the site I've found to be a great resource over the years. Probably best to leave this for someone else, and I dont like the setup where your under the supervision of another person. I dont mind being part of a team but a team with equal authority.

PHP Main :: C++ Main :: Java Main :: irc.freenode.net

Everyone has equal authority in the team. I don't think supervision was the right word.
It's just that the team is composed of people with different specialisations. I'm not a programmer, so I don't handle that.
I have basic knowledge of webbuilding, but not nearly enough for a project such as this, so it's handled by the webdevelopers.

The team as it is, is build on collaboration. But there is a bit of structure, which has formed over time.
It's hard to explain but it has grown that way.

I also don't think our project is as easy to compare to GameDev.net as you make it out.
That's an information resource, while this is aimed at bringing people in touch with eachother, share their knowledge, team up and create games.

And by creating games, they get to know what it's like to create them and they get first hand experience.
There will be of course information and other resources available via the site, but that's not the point of it.

You mentioned in your first post that you expect people to do this for free, which is pretty wrong to assume that people won't want to be paid for their time and efforts.

Sounds kind of off-putting . You're expecting the PHP programmer to work under supervision, without pay...

The way you have it laid out there just sounds kind of rude. Like almost as if you expect someone to be willing to attend all of those super important msn meetings and work under supervision, and do hundreds of dollars worth of php programming for free...

Whatever. Good luck I guess. Next time try to be less presumptuous about the whole thing.

The LittleMonsterGames website: http://www.littlemonstergames.com - super fun, I promise :)

If I came off as rude, then I hereby apologise for it, that was not my intention.
The thing is, we're all full-time students, we're all doing this on a voluntary basis alongside school, without really getting paid ourselves.
We're not in a position to be able to pay people, not yet anyway... but that's not really the point of the initiative

I should've been more clear in my initial post, though it seems I can't edit it.

To be specific: you will be working alongside the rest of the team, but mostly with the webdeveloper.

Thank you.

That's the problem, you're in a position where you're looking for someone good enough to produce the final result you're after but you're unwilling (or unable) to provide pay for. This is fine if the person interested has a passion for your project but if you're after someone to join up for the work and then leave, you're going to have problems. As web developers it's possible to be paid quite a bit of money for the work you're after and we as people need money to survive.

I'm sure you'll get some interest, but don't expect to get good web developers on board, if you do you're very lucky.

Well, then I suppose I have too much hope that people are willing to help someone out just because they want to help someone out, rather than just doing work, doing as they're told, getting paid and leaving.

I'll consider that in the future.
