The Mario Paint music part is essentially a limited sequencer using notation/manuscript (with mario icons) with limited scales.
It was kind of neat for consoles. I played with that for hours.

If you use Reason, my friend and I have actually ripped every instrument from the game, and converted them into something that can be used in the NNXT sampler. believe it or not, but damn near every song I've ever posted on NG boasts at least one distorted mario paint sound :)
That distorted panning bell noise at the intro? THE MARIO PAINT STAR!

However, that Mario Paint Composer sequencer thing is for lame-os. You know, the ones that have all the sharps and flats and stuff.
The best stuff comes from the actual sequencer itself that was on the game... and folks like ol' TomBobBlender make that pretty well evident.
