I just wanted to explain this, and see what anyone else thinks about this theory. And let it be known that with my theory, you wouldn't actually be able to INTERACT with anything, it would just be viewing it.

Things you would need:

1. A super powered telescope that can see infinitely, with no questions asked.
2. A spaceship that could fly, say, 1 million times faster than the speed of light.

Now, depending on how fast your spaceship[p can travel, you zoom out into space, say 100 million light years.

You turn around, and with your telescope, you focus in on the Earth.

NOW

Seeing as you are 100 million light years away, (and light years measure how far light travels in one year) you would be able to see what was happening on the earth 100 million years ago.

The reason is, you are viewing the light that is out in space, that was eminated from the earth 100 million years ago. Because light goes on forever in every direction, you can essentially blow past the light that was eminated yesterday, and watch it all happen again.

Any thoughts?

No. You see according to the theory of relativity time stops at the speed of light. So by going faster than the speed of light you would go back in time. So if you had a spaceship that could move faster than the speed of light, you could go back in time. You could also go into the future by going directly at the speed of light. Since time is stopped time/space around you would continue to progress while you are preserved.

As far as your little telescope goes since it would be transmitting the video to you at the speed of light you would be waiting a few million years to get the pictures. Even so since the telescope is now in the past you're out of luck.

Anyway the amount of energy it would take to make a fair sized object move at the speed of light is just ridiculous and it's completely impossible.

Damn, even if it doesn't work like that it would be awesome as hell! Imagine, seeing live dinosaurs with your own eyes! Gigantic flies flying around! Man oh man...But appearently the most important law of physics which prohibits us from doing is - "If it sounds awesome as hell, it won't happen".

Sure if you were 100 million light-years from earth and you had a very very powerful telescope yes you would be viewing the Earth of 100 million years ago.

But if you have a ship that can moves faster than the speed of light - there's no point behind it.

Just by sending the ship there at that speed would send it into the past and you would be viewing the earth at 100 million years before that point in time you sent the ship to.

Hey, that's not a retarded idea at all! So tell me, how do you plan on getting a telescope that can see the end of the universe and a spaceship that can go 100 million times faster than a speed that we've not even discovered yet

The funny thing about theories is that you can't prove jack shit.

I understand what he's saying, and if you could somehow manage to get 100 million light years from the Earth, you'd be viewing the light was was being reflected off Earth from 100 million years ago.

No because you'd die without air.

This is just theory man, I think OP simplified everything so it would easier to understand by adding objects like telescope and spaceship. What he ment was if you were a flying camera who travels faster than light. INB4 cameras cnat tarvel taht fast olol idot.

you can instantly transmit an electronic signal no matter the distance if you have a power cord long enough because electrons are just marbles lined up and pushing one at the beginning moves the one at the end of the line

obviously the future depends on pulling very long power cords all across the universe oh man the future is so exciting

Why wouldn't you just see yourself getting to where you are now?

As you look back where you've been, the light that was emitted/reflected from your ship would reach you in-front-of, and before the light from the earth would reach you.

Actually, it wouldn't be. If you have heard of tachyons, you will know that as they lost energy, they move faster, and vice versa. This ends up meaning that the slowest they can possibly go is the speed of light, and the fastest would be much faster.

Straight away there's a problem. They is no speed, faster than light.

Couldn't you just use the wish? Scientifically as long as you had a wish the fairy wouldn't be necessary. Unless of course you consider the wish useless without anybody to grant it.

I was trying to make the point that it is total bullshit and that the requirements he named didn't make ANY sense at all, that in that case I also could just make a special time machine (no questions asked) and go back in time

facepalm.

according to my astronomy professor in college, particles can not move at the speed of light because if they did they would gain huge amounts of mass (more than the universe or something). So 100 times that would be even more impossible

anyway i think the best bet for your theory is wormholes like someone mentioned before, and all you would need was a super epic telescope

Well, let's just toss relativity asside for a second and consider this.

Say your vessel can travel at two times the speed of light.
You travel, for one year at two times the speed of light, which puts you at a distance we will call "x". through the magic of your advanced technology you can come to an instant halt with your telescope pointed at earth.

At that point, until one year later, you would see earth from one year before you left.

When I was little I would spin round in circles.
The centrifugal force would send me back into the past, where I befriended a gay dinosaur called Tim-Tim.
To the observer in the present, I would just appear to be passed out in a puddle of my own vomit, but I was actually in the past. This can be explained with a quantum mechanics theory called Schrödinger's cat.
Travelling to the future is impossible as time is relative, and you can't travel to a future which doesn't exist yet...

Not even close to being right.

Electromagnetic signals travels at the speed of electromagnetic waves. You know...light.
