Well, im taking a liking to playing REAL instruments and not those plastic rockband ones. And I do like both guitar and drums. So should I begin to invest my money into a guitar or drum kit?

For guitar, i just mostly want to play the classic rock tunes? So would a gibson be best for me?

For drums, I just like to play 80's beats with the electronic snare to get that 80's distinctive snare sound.

So im making a choice here NG, which one would I choose, the best with the guitar that i know is that i can read and play tabs. With drums im just horrible with the repeated kick drum and tom combination. Hopefully ANY guitar would cost around $175 used at a pawn shop or something.

This is exactly what they want. Sure the guitar is better quality and will last you longer, provided you don't act like a fool with it... but really, you could settle for a mid-ranged guitar, something cheaper... especially if you are just starting.

I would have to say that you should invest your money in a drum set.

Invest In CVGI or BFNB either one of those will treat you well. Fucking investing in an instrument, the chances of it ever paying itself off are pretty slim. Stocks are where its at pussy.

If you're getting a guitar, I would HIGHLY recommend the Epiphone Les Paul Special II. It's not even that it's a good starter guitar, but it's incredibly low priced for its quality, and you can make it sound like pretty much anything you like.

As for an amp, I would get the Fender Frontman 212 DSP. It's loaded with built-in effects (No screwing around with pedals for half an hour trying to get everything adjusted and hooked up right, woohoo), like Flange, Reverb, Chorus, and a couple other ones. t has presets to emulate other Fender amps, as well. It's light enough to use a practice amp, but beefy enough to bring gigging.

It's the amp that I'm currently running, and it has a surprisingly loud sound, but if you're going into the hardcore customization area, I would suggest getting a Reaper 12", if you can find one. I've never actually used one, but I hear they're amazing.

For cables, I would recommend Monster Cable, they're almost transparent, and let the sound of pretty much any guitar ring through perfectly, and they're rather inexpensive as well.

Musician's Friend FTW.

For drums, I would buy Ludwig Elements. I personally have a Ludwig Accent CS set, but that came with cymbals that I need to upgrade anyways.

As for cymbals, I would buy either Zildian A or ZHT. I find that ZHT is a bit darker, but it's really up to the player.

As for sticks, I can really only offer opinions, as one stick isn't "better" than another. Some are lighter or heavier, some are more or less bouncy, and so on. I use Zildjian Artist Series Mike Manginis because I like the extra weight, and I usually keep a pair with hockey tape on the handles laying around because it adds more weight than you would think, but I need the lighter ones for some playing styles.

I hope this has helped!

No kidding. Been playing 8 years and I'm still learning and getting better.

If you opt for guitar, go to wallmart and get one of them cheap ones. Keep it for a year, and if you're improving, practicing every day, and really enjoying it, you can feel safe upgrading.

On second thought, this is probably a better idea, you don't want a several hundred dollar cash drain laying around the house. You would probably want a cheap amp such as a Rocktron Velocity VG05. I had a Roland Micro Cube, which is actually quite an amazing amp, same amount of effects as my Fender, and slightly more customizable, but not even a sixth as loud, but a bitch to find.

You don't sound like you're serious about this at all, I mean, you're asking us if it'd be okay to buy a Gibson for your first guitar, and you're also telling us that you want "that distinctive 80s snare sound" on the drums, which by the way can be replicated with your rock band drums ( assuming you have a set ) and a set up of samples.

So, in theory, you shouldn't be asking us which instrument to get.

Baby can't you see, you belong with me

Drums... The knowledge you'd get from it would be very useful in the future, especially if you're planning on being a musician. And no matter what anyone says about it being for people with no talent, it being easy, it's not.

I'd say just go for whichever you enjoy more. Also if you're doing guitar, then stick with something a bit cheaper than a Gibson, especially for your first one.

Depends.

To be a passable drummer, you really need to have dedication. Just practicing is enough to get good, really. I'm a fairly decent drummer and all I've done is practice for about a year or so.

As for guitar, it takes more effort. Learning a decent song can be fairly easy to incredibly difficult, but if you want to use it to be in a band or something you have to have a fair bit of know-how and creativity.

But a guitar is probably going to be less expensive, so I'd say go with that. But it might not have as much payoff though.

Get a guitar. It will be easier to get rid of when you inevitably give up.

I've been playing drums for 5 years now, and I have to say that I still love it. Yes, I would be biased towards drums.

Yes, I'll admit that it's fun to hit things. The only bad part is convenience...because drums are not convenient. Packing up, loading, moving to the place, setting up, then finally playing!, then tearing down, loading back up, then moving back, then storing away.

I still highly recommend drumming, though. It's a lot of fun when you start to get to be good at playing.
Either instrument you pick, you'll enjoy it if you can get through the initial wall of just learning a new instrument. Stick with it!

Guitar. It would be cheaper to get a decent starter guitar than a decent starter kit of drums, and the guitar would take up less space and be much easier to take with you wherever you want to go.

I say guitar for portability and practicality , i have a ukelele !

Or just go for a Drum-guitar they're a mix of the two, plus guitar is better for solo stuff.

You dont go out on a field with your girlfriend, sit down on the grass , and play the drums do you ?

do you?

He could totally be the next Paul McCartney. I bet Wings would let you play with them.

Is that band still around?

You want to get a Gibson for $175? Hah! Good luck. If you're going for a guitar, then you probably won't be able to get anything decent with that much. Maybe a low end Ibanez, which would be a good starting point, but not great for classic rock. A Fender could suit you quite well but would still be out of your price range.

As for drums, you're not gonna be getting much for that much. My brother's kit cost him about £900, about $1500 and it's still just a semi-decent kit. If you manage to get something for $175, they you're a lucky guy.

Go with guitar. Its more worth it to learn and there is a lot you can do with a guitar, with out pedals and different effects. And don't start out with Gibson; they are really expensive. You may find later on that you don't like playing anymore and then you'll have a 2-3 thousand dollar piece of equipment laying around. I suggest either Epiphone or Squier, the entry level brands for Gibson and Fender (respectively).

Better yet, get a guitar starter kit. Head on to Guitar Center and search for "guitar packs." These packs come with the guitar, the amp, an instrument chord, usually a guitar bag, a couple of picks, a guitar strap, an auto tuner, and an instructional DVD. Its definitely worth it.
