Since the release and hype surrounding beatles rockband, I have for about the last two months been rediscovering the beatles and watching a ton of videos on youtube. For probably about a month I could not get over how good they were and my renewed appreciation of them was incredible. i kept thinking about how amazing it would have been if they didnt break up, or at least if Lennon had not gotten shot they might have gotten back together.

Sometimes i would think about how amazing it would be to actually go see them perform today (well...minus george) and how it would be so great. This was all fine and dandy until I started watching videos of paul performing recently and his new songs. He looked haggard and worn down, he had these pretty boys backing up his vocals, and his new songs were just generic and plain.

I then started to think about all the other old bands that are still around today like the beach boys, rolling stones, aerosmith, acdc, kiss and i began to realize something. Fuck No!!! i wouldnt ever want to see them perform today! They would be shadows of their former selves, trying to cling on to the last bits of glory. I pictured John with balding long gray hair, still trying to be some sort of hippie rebel with the wrinkled up old twat yoko ono standing near by. They would come out with unoriginal new albums with recycled old songs and people would buy them and say they were good, but in their hearts they would know that they were piles of dogshit compared to Abbey Road and Sgt Pepper.

But... Maybe just maybe the beatles were two awesome for that. The creative forces that flowed from them would somehow survive and and continue on for 40 more years. When they performed live yeah they would be old, but they would still rock the shit. Maybe they would still be something great

I've thought about this for a long time now and finally realized that maybe this would make a good topic on the bbs. So what do you guys think. If they were still around today would they just be shitty attempts to stay relevant, or would they still be a relevant and amazing band?

They stopped touring long before they broke up.
Only Paul wanted to carry on with it.

True. Most people don't realise that they were together for a relatively short period of time.

With the amount of stuff they brought out in that short time, it's an easy mistake to make.

true i guess i was assuming that eventually beatles mania would subside and after a certain period they would do concerts every once in a while if not tour

The thing about The Beatles was that they decided what was relevant. To put it it broadly, musical trends started with them in a lot of cases. Sure, they were influenced, but they took their influences and crafted them into a new kind of music, over and over again. Of course they'd be relevant.

Otherwise, the reason that they broke up was because they had reached their creative limits with one another, and couldn't legitimately collaborate in the situations they were provided. They probably couldn't create any new material, at least not for a long time. For a while, they were quite sick of each other.

Just a couple things to think about.

It's pretty pathetic if Rock Band got you into The Beatles.

Well KISS can lick my big hairy ballsack for all I care. KISS is THE MOST OVERRATED band in the history of music itself.

What I'm saying is that a poor game like Rock Band shouldn't get you into The Beatles. I loved The Beatles through the music and that alone. I didn't wait around until Rock Band came along like a sheep and suddenly fall in love with them.

You could also say the same thing with Zeppelin. If they were still around today would it be like the Stones were nobody really wants to see how old they really are and blindly believe they're great, or would it be like AC/DC were they have legit hits, but they only come out every decade?

Come on now, let them get into it.
Does it really matter how they got into it?
Sure, I've loved the beatles for a long time, on account of my guitar teacher having grown up with them, and loving their music, and on account of I've been having "please please me" played in my house since I was born, but so long as the kids are liking the music, does it matter that much?

That's true, they would probably have to surrender to the music industry and quickly pump out shit that the public would buy. And it would probably all be ballads. I can't see the public buying the likes of yellow submarine again in this day and age.

Oh god, where have you been for the past 30 years?

Seriously, look at Steven Tyler today (Lead singer of Aerosmith), and what he looked like in the 70's. He's an old washed up drug-addict now. The beach boys are a bunch of old farts now, and ac/dc...well just does feel right. I got into the beatles from watching Thomas the tank engine. See'ing as ringo was the narrator and mr.conductor. Looked him up one day, learned about him and the beatles, listened to a few songs, bought the beatles 1 and here I am today.

Just time changes...alot. Thats how we evolved to the shit that comes out of the disney record companies today.

Also i dont know if you noticed, but John lennon did die too and not just george. He was shot in the back 5 times in 1980.

i agree. AC/DC said the same thing. but KISS is just.... blah. AC/DC: still going strong for over thirty years. i mean the hits that they write are just awesome! and they just came out with a new album last year, hopefully with a new one being written as we speak. again, hopefully... anyone else with opinions about how much AC/DC sux i really dont care. im probably the least offended person on NG, tho of course someone is gonna say otherwise. again. dont care

NO SHIT!!!? Hence the what if thread. I said lennon died and then i speculated about what he would look like; an old washed up hippie. then i mentioned george because even if lennon hadnt gotten shot george would still be dead today.

AC/DC is completely overrated. I'm fucking serious. Their last album sucked.

But actually, I did hear that Paul and John were planning on getting George and Ringo back and putting the band back together.

Then we come to the slowly sucking. Everything must pass, you rise, you fall, and hopefully you try and keep what you remember going. Their glory days are over. Much like Old Red Wine by The Who sucked compared to Happy Jack.

You just hope like hell the stuff doesn't suck and don't give in without a fight.
