The purpose of a gun is to kill, you didn't need a gun.
I believe that thievery would be a lot more common if people didn't fear the chance that they would end up dead. In a situation where you're measuring your life versus some diamong rings or whatever, you're likely to chose not to break into a house - but if you know the guy is going to cower and call the police so they police can show up half an hour to a full hour later and just stand around and go "welp," then a thief is more likely to rob someone.
Also people get up in arms about how they're morally better than the rest of the world because "If a burglar broke into my house I would let him just take my stuff as long as he doesnt hurt me because Im not materialistic at all and value life" but then when their car gets stolen, or their shit gets broken into, its a fucking fury of rage, or they aren't materialistic but they always have some excuse for why they can't offer shelter to the homeless or food to the starving or toys for children whose families cant afford them. The fact is, everybody in this age is materialistic, even if they try real real hard to be "better than that".
There was a story of 4 kids in Connecticut or somewhere breaking into a house and murdering the occupants for fun, and then posting about it on facebook which is the only reason they got caught. They chose this house because it was in the wilderness and they knew they had a low chance of the police getting there in time. The kids all used knives, and I think in this case a gun would have been a great deterrent, although yeah I guess it could have gone awry, but I don't think the children would have tried to overpower someone pointing a gun at them, if they are only equipped with knives.
Guns in the public are a double edged sword, though, I feel, and I am torn a bit.
