Tom, if you are reading this, please implement wide screen ads so it doesn't go from some awesome intricate side banner to the regular web graphic... It really fucks up the aesthetics of the design...

Hey guys - the site is free. It is paid by those nice ads. The ads were specifically designed to go with NG's design. Inseatd of complaining about them, go click them. Be glad that NG is free.
You don't pay a cent to use the site you all love, so don't criticize the only way they make a decent amount of money to keep it up with.

its easy to block the ads with Opera.
You basically find the name of the .jpg image and add it to the urlfilter document.
I've given NG enough in the form of my Flash submissions (ad revenue from those). I'm not going to deal with full-screen ads. NG won't start charging a monthly fee because NG isn't worth a monthly fee.

As stated before, the reason he haas to put those up is probably because of everyone using adblock. I admit, I used to use it too, but with my new windows install, I didn't even bother installing adblock again.
If you'd have a website you pay to keep up there for people, you'd have more of an idea probably. Be glad they're not pop-ups and pop-unders flying around everywhere.
