Title self-explanatory, GeoCities is closing down today...forever.

Today is the day when we say goodbye forever to GeoCities after 15 long years. GeoCities first opened in 1994 and it was an instant hit. This service did more for the web than almost all other Internet services ever designed, and it played a major role in the web's popularity. Many believe that the Internet wouldn't have become so popular if it weren't for GeoCities.

What do you guys think of this? Honestly, I think the website's explanation of GeoCities' popularity + use is a bit out of whack -- I very rarely ever came in contact with it. How about you?

The end of an era.

The only reason I was going to be sad for Geocities is because the best fanfiction I've ever read is hosted there. Thankfully though the writer has a Geocities Plus account so her site won't disappear.

RIP Geocities.

I couldn't care less about GeoCities, to be honest. I've never come into contact with a Geocities website, so they don't concern me in the slightest. Plus, Yahoo is making another service, just like it, so nobody serious about making a website is losing out.

Still, it might come as a shock for anyone with a GeoCities site when it disappears.

Oh please, haha. You know I meant for civilian use and non-research ventures. The internet now compared to pre-1994 is a very different beast.

Yeah, 1994 was when geocities changed the web. 4 years before the first google boy.

It appears that the South Park fan-site I made when I was 11 by ripping images off other websites will now be lost forever.

My one great accomplishment shall return from whence it came. :(

Seriously, most people either have myspace, twitter, facebook, freewebs anyway. so might as well save some bandwidth by getting rid of an ancient artifcate.

Well this sucks, I loved Geocity sites. They were my access to everything Pokemon and Dragonball Z when I was a child.

Go fuck yourself. To some people, this is major. Imagine if you were Tom and you were losing Newgrounds. Would you like to see all that work disappear?

Damn I remember when people were all psyched about that place. Boy times sure does fly. The next thing will be newgrounds and google teaming together. Then youtube, google, newgrounds would own the entire net.

Nooo where else will I go to get all the latest news and gossip circa 1996, stunning-quality midi files, and low-resolution-poorly animated gif files with 4 frames in them?
