Why can't we rate art?

Why?

With everything else...music, movies, game...we rate it.

Otherwise it's just a heap of random garbage that just belongs on a user's blog.

The hell if I know. I guess scouting is to make sure a user's art deserves to be in the portal, and once that happens it can be rated like anything else on the site.

Forget the art portal, I'm still trying to wrap my head around the front page ads.

I think Newgrounds is at a good peak right now....it has it's faults but everything is there for a reason, I;'d say it's using it's full potential and we should probably have fun while it lasts.
A little off-topic though, well the flash portal has judgement, audio has mods, and art has scouting.

Yeah, as far as I'm concerned the art portal is a poor idea, and has been done even more poorly.

I mean, it looks nothing like the Audio or Flash portal, there's no "Best All Time" or "Recent Entries" and the categories are extremely vague compared to the Audio portal's, especially the million-and-one ways to call a song "Electronic"

They are quite, QUITE different, for example, I only like Ambient music from those.
It's amazing, I don't like the other types of Electronic music.

The art portal's layout is designed so that many art works can be previewed at once and it works really well.
A best of all time and recent entries isn't really needed seeing as it sorts the art by date and you can change it to sort by score.

You know what I hate? The fact that the art portal is the same basic thing as the youtube "Featured Videos" section.

It's like "Okay, we're going to give these people even more attention simply because they were already popular, but we're not going to give anyone a real engine to gain recognition for their work. So becoming popular enough for us to give them the extra recognition is pratically impossible."

The Flash Portal, however, displays everyones new work.

I'm pretty sure that last point you made explains why users can't rate unscouted art, or at that's not been sent over to the portal itself, because they may be "random garbage". It's not saying that all unscouted or un-portal'd art is "bad", but that rating it isn't important. Even with that in mind, people will enjoy putting their sketches up for people to see and comment on. For submissions up for scoring in the portal itself, rating is as simple as it is in the Flash and audio sections of Newgrounds. If you believe a user's work should be rateable if they're not scouted, you can do your bit and recommend them. In that way, the system, despite all its criticisms over the past few months, doesn't work too badly at all.

You might be interested in this thread if you've not already checked it out. I'd advise you to read it through relatively thoroughly first if you feel like chipping in, but it seems that the art mods are looking through it quite frequently, so if you have any suggestions or queries, I think youd be better off directing them there.

I'm not all up-to-date on the art portal, so I might be talking nonsense. I've just looked up the rules and concluded this myself!
