I need some good recommendations for good movies from that period.

I need to write a paper of 3 movies, with the following requirements:
- One American movie
- One European movie
- One silent movie

(of course, all from the period of 1910 - 1945)

The reason why I didn't use Google, was because I thought that people from the same community kind of have the same taste. And something personal with a short synopsis would be great too.

So, can someone help out a fellow Newgrounder?

Even more old school, The Arrival of a Train at La Ciotat, from 1895, by the Lumiere brothers.

I must warn you all, however; the above film may appear as if a train is actually coming out of your computer screen and into your rooms, but, rest assured, that is not actually happening. It's just a moving picture of a train, not an actual train itself. Likewise, you may wonder where the piano is that is making that music and how it came to be in your room unseen, that's just another technological trick. I'm sure some of you may be familiar with the moving pictures already, but I figured I'd better give fair warning just to be safe.

That, good sir, is a brilliant suggestion.

How about doing the paper on Dracula? There were a number of versions between 1910 - 1945.

American film: Dracula
European film: Dracula (the Spanish version)
Silent film: Nosferatu

I've linked you Wikipedia articles on all three of them, it'll also be easier to write about three films with the same general theme, rather then writing about The Three Stooges in one paper and then one big motherfucker like Citizen Kane in the other.

You can thank me later when you get an awesome grade.

The Kid comes to mind. Great film starring the legendary Charlie Chaplin and it really portrays what impoverished life was like during the era.

The Wizard of Oz and Citizen Kane were the first movies that came to mind here. Also, you could scroll through IMDB's best titles from a certain decade.

Battleship Potemkin is a brilliant movie, a serious candidate for your European selection.

Yeah I would probably go with this too. Much easier to write about than most of the other artsy European films that were made at the time.

This is what I would suggest for the European selection or the silent one depending on which you use it for (you could use it for either).

Personally I prefer Strike! to Battleship Potemkin but, Potemkin is much easier to write about partly due to the famous Odessa steps sequence.

There's also Triumph Of The Will which I think is in the public domain now so you can get your hands on it easily (I might be wrong).

It's a shame they have to be after 1910; I have a double-disc DVD set of films from 1910 and before.

I'd go with All Quiet on The Western Front for the European film

Ones not mentioned that are good.

Birth of a nation 1915 (American, silent) long as shit though.
Das Kabinett Des Doktor Caligari 1919, (aka cabinet of Dr. Caligari, European, Silent) Tim Burton must have been inspired by this one.
Broken Blossoms 1919 (American, silent) depressing but good.
All Quiet On The Western Front1930 (American) classic
City Lights1931 (American, Silent) Charlie Chaplin epic.
Freaks 1932 (America) horror using real circus freaks.
Triumph Des Willens 1934 (aka Triumph of the Will, European) Excellent documentary on Hitler while he was alive, this one really shows you a different side of the nazis as more of a politcal party than video game bad guy clichés.
The Maltese Falcon 1941 (American) Film noir they way its supposed to be done.
