what kind of programs you working with? I do such work on the side, was minutes from attending a couple schools of the subject such as Savannah College of Art and Design, and Full Sail. But I decided it was more of a hobby and I didn't need such schooling until later in life. Are you still working with flash or have you moved onto things like maya, 3dsm, zbrush, etc?

Maya, 3DStudioMax, Zbrush, Illustrator, Photoshop, not so much flash anymore, sadly.

I know all of the Creative Suite but very rarely use Illustrator. What are the advantages? I do a lot of advertisement posts for clubs on my campus, but always saw photoshop as a happy medium because the posters are small enough to not notice any difference if I had just used crisper vector graphics. The only time I've actually used illustrator on a large scale was to trace over an image of a poster I found in an anime that I really liked, so I could blow it up to a few feet without loss of quality to be able to print.
Oh nice, next year I'm going to be studying Game Design, so i'll be using the same programs. I have already pretty much familarised myself with 3DStudioMax 2010, Photoshop and Zbrush.
Awesome choice.

Illustrator is used a lot in print... just because you can resize to any size, and it still remains crisp.

Do you have to do any concept art for your portfolio? If so I recomend Copic fineliners, a white gel pen and some markers. You may also want to use acrylic paints for finished designs.
You could just use Photoshop with a Wacom Pad, but I feel it's easier and more beneficial to draw some up on A3 Marker paper.
