Think about it, we are about as advanced gaming-wise as it comes.

We've pushed past eye-gasmic graphics, we've utilized every kind of technology - including that gimmicky motion sensing shit, we have discs that can hold massive amounts of information, we almost have no more needs for discs because of online communities that are growing, we can update our systems everytime something gets outdated, the only thing we can't change is the hardware, but that's pretty failsafe.

Is there going to be a need for next-gen consoles? What else could we innovate?

virtual reality, utilizing brain waves, forcing pets into a contraption so you can play co-op halo with them...the list is endless.

This is pure, assisted self-destruction

Mind created characters, ultimate control of the game, more resistence, more applications, etc. can´t name all ideas though...

Did you ever hear about that time in the fifties when they tried to close down the patent office on the grounds that nothing meaningful was left to be invented?
Yeah.

There are tons of innovations we could still do. And these ideas could not only be used for gaming but Medicine, Education, and communication. Lasers, motion sensing and holograms are excellent examples of these

In 10 years time, we're going to look back on the games of today and comment on how unrealistic they look.

Are you joking? PC graphics already look better than consoles. Most games on consoles can't even display in 1080p resolution, or do more than 8 vs. 8 multiplayer. With better hardware, console games could be massively improved. You ever heard of physX?

Compare a game like, say, Uncharted 2 or Gears of War (arguably the prettiest games the two most powerful consoles). They still don't look perfectly like real life. I assume that games will get better and better looking until the point where it's like living another life.

I seem to recall something about an experimental disc that could store something like 80 Terrabytes of stuff - if those become the norm, then games could expand to the point of insanity.

Until game developers realise Bloom and HDR are fucking pointless and unrealistic and that more colours are required to display photo realistic graphics, there will always be "improvements" and "innovations".

Also, Gears of War looks shit. Brown, brown, brown, gray, black, brown, brown, red.

As far as I'm concerned, we won't need anymore next-gen systems after we get games like this.

Thats what they said with every generation.
We can't imagine them being better than they are, but they will get better.

Though if this gen never ended, it would be a great place to stop.

Just because.

Until video games can rival CGI movies effortlessly in both scale and depth, we'll never be as fully satisfied as you are.

But I feel we're getting closer, each generation...

No more need for next-gen consoles?

The graphics will keep on advancing until each polygon has a size of a pixel.
But there's this thing that makes me wonder: How are they gonna call the consoles that succeed the "High Definition" ones? EMFHD? (Even More Fucking High Definition)
They better not, the supposed "High Definition" already ruined shit in gaming (developers care about graphics even more than before, and it raised the prices of PS3 and 360 games by 10 dollars). And most pf the PS3 and 360 games aren't anything near HD.

It's already been said, but graphics will always improve. I remember when I was like 4 or 5 and thought N64's graphics were amazing even from the eyes of a little kid, and then whn I got a PS2 and Gamecube I was even more amazed. And now I think graphics now are pretty realistic for the amount of power the hardware has. Just imagine in 10 years what graphics will look like, I can't even picture it.

What disappoints me about the 360 is that there is a lack of childrens games, which is why I like the Wii, because without the kiddy games less and less young children will start playing video games....

and don't say they can pick up a copy of COD MW2 and suddenly start becoming good at it

Blah blah graphics...

What about numbers of unique on-screen characters? What about realistic terrain, unlimited view distance? Last time I checked games still had annoyingly long load times and limited processing resources.

Imagine when there can be armies in the thousands of unique players with unique character models and unique costumes representing themselves on-line fighting armies of other players and maybe you commanding them as a general being able to view the entire battlefield in real time swooping about on a massive scale landscape with no loading, no stuttering, no glitches.

We are nowhere near what technology will bring us in the future of gaming.
