Here's the story. I was sitting in the office and saw the lost and found. In it I saw The Extreme Teen Bible. I was so tempted to take it. I looked inside and saw that ti belonged to a kid who had already graduated. So I took it and decided that it was ok because there was no way he could've gotten it back anyway. So I ask you NG, am I a thief? It was a bible. Is God really going to be mad at me for trying to deepen my spirituality and understanding of The Bible. It's actually a really good bible. It does a great job of explaining the events and morals of the bible.

I reckon most of the people posting in this thread, despite acting all holier-than-thou, would have done the same thing were they in your position.
But yeah... stealing is bad kids.

I never said I was above this. One time after getting my picture taken with my idol, Wade Fulp, I stole a cadny bar and was arrested for it.

Yah I remember one time I had to do community service so I was working at a thrift shop and I stole a plaque(sp?) that said "There is one thing money can't buy... Poverty." It was just too funny for me not to steal.

No you're not.
It was in the Lost & Found box and like you said, the kid had already graduated so if you didn't take the Bible it would just have ended up rotting there. So it's better in your hands then not. The fact that you checked who it had belonged to and question whether you did right or wrong is proof too that you're no thief.
Thief's don't care when they steal.

Pffft, The Satanic Bible, I was never impressed with that silly LeVay, The Necronomicon is better.
Also I don't think the OP is a thief. The person who used to own that item abandoned it, and was not going to come back for it.
When do we finish unpacking?

Some of you forget that the world isn't actually black and white.
I've stolen a fair few items from stores before, never feel guilt but at the same time I know I'm not a horrible person for other reasons anyway.
This kid is not a thief, or a bad person, not by a long shot.

When it comes to lost and found, the saying finders "keepers, looser weepers" is law no matter what the item is. So no you are not steeling, you're just collecting from a pool of goods that no one claimed.

Of course it's stealing. The question is if it's wrong or not. It's wrong if:
- You knew a brother or sister of his that hadn't graduated yet. - You could find this kid's phone number and ask him if he wanted it back. - You could otherwise contact and/or return it to him.
This link doesn't do anything.

By definition, yes. The right thing to do would've been to ask if you can have it. If you have any reason to think that they would've said no, you know that what you did was wrong.

I'm fairly sure that it is stealing, which is made even more serious since it is a holy object. You're definitely going to hell...
Just because he lost it or misplaced it doesn't mean his rites to the bible are destroyed. It is still his possession, which you now possess - which is stealing.

I partially agree with this, it was abandoned and probably kept much longer than it should have been so I'd say the OP is not a thief. That fact he checked who it belonged to helps in finding out if it's abandoned or stolen but to me the questioning of whether or not taking it is right or wrong has little to do with this.
Why I don't agree with this is there are thieves who do care when they steal, and pick and choose what they steal or who they steal from based on whether or not it would be right or wrong.
