HI everyone,

So I'm planning to take a trip to London next summer and I was trying to compare airline prices already. However, I think most airlines haven't scheduled their flights yet. I was wondering if anyone travels to London or the area often or last summer so I know what to expect in terms of prices during the summer.

Thanks

A round trip from London Heathrow to JFK/O'Hare costs, presently, around £270 ($440).

Although the prices will probably rise by the summer of 2010.

Dude, just do London. I think it's a great place to visit, as does the missus (who is a yank).

Depends on what you're after, if you like the seaside go down to cornwall, if you like the mountains and walking then go to the peak(or lake)district, otherwise go to London. There are lots of shit places in England, London is (apparently) very nice. Also maybe you could come along to the Newgrounds London meetup?

Why not be adventurous and come up here to Scotland. Edinburgh is a decent city. A lot smaller than London, but still a decent place to come and visit.

It slightly annoys me how Americans seem to view England as Britain. There are three other countries included under that name as well you know.

Last time I was in London: March 1997. Obviously I don't live anywhere near it. If I could afford to go there again, I would. I wasn't put off by the crowding at all since I'm from NYC.

God fucking damn it...

Glasgow is a scary place. Haha. I don't visit that city all too often. I do however have several friends who come from Glasgow, all of whom are decent people.

But yea, if you're going to come up to Scotland Edinburgh is where you most likely want to go, if you plan on staying in a city.

Don't be fooled. Despite being expensive, London is by far the best city in the UK. I've had some great nights in other cities, namely Nottingham and Newcastle, but the clubs London has to offer are too good an opportunity to miss.

I'll look in to visiting Scotland too. We're going to be there for a week so we might as well go to as many places as possible.

What exactly do you intend on seeing/doing if you do come to the UK? Going to London for the sake of going to London seems a bit silly to me, unless you have specific goals whilst being there.

I will say this, though - if you do decide to come over to the UK, keep to just one or two places where you might stay. It's a common misconception in the US that the UK is a small place, which by comparison it is. However, if you're not careful, you could spend half your time here travelling around and not actually seeing/doing what you might enjoy.

But yeah, elaborate on what you want to do when you get here, that way people will be able to offer other suggestions as to what you should do, where you should go, etc, providing you with more choices.

There's a place in Britain where the roads are paved with marble and lined with majestic oaks, the street lamps are made of solid gold, the buildings were designed by the finest architects in Europe, there's a river of molten chocolate running through the city centre, the sun always shines, and the female populace is almost exclusively made up of incredibly hot 21 year olds.

It's called Scunthorpe, you should pretty much race up there as soon as your feet hit the tarmac.

Do London if you want great sightseeing. It has a lot of landmarks. I'm a fan of it, myself.

Cheers, probably the first time Scunthorpe has been mentioned on NG too...

Seriously though, if you want to see the sights then London is the only place to go, really.

If you want a slice of Britain then I would look at places smaller cities like York or Chester or Edinburgh. They tick all the tourist boxes but they're a lot more manageable. I went to university in York and it has 365 pubs which is never a bad thing. It is also right next door to the North Yorkshire Moors and the Yorkshire Dales where there are plenty of things to do.

Come when it's warm though, Britain is miserable in the winter.

Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, eastern countries...

Anything in Europe is better than London to be honest.

Yeah; it still takes a good 6 hours to go from one end to the other, small size or not. If you're staying in London and want to go see the lake district or Newcastle (or somewhere else up north), you'll be spending literally all day traveling. Not nice, especially considering how unreliable some public transport links can be.

But yeah, elaborate on what you want to do when you get here, that way people will be able to offer other suggestions as to what you should do, where you should go, etc, providing you with more choices.

^^Also that. London has a lot of stuff to do, but not everything you can do in England is present in London. Some activities can only be done in certain places, some of which can be hundreds of miles away from London (see previous point).
