So 8 years ago animated sigs had a larger file size than they do now? Because that seems to be what you're implying, since whatever the case, an animated GIF is going to be larger than a JPEG.
Either way it doesn't really matter, since if the size limit is still 40kB, there's not going to be a huge amount of animation anyone will be able to do without it looking shit. And it will probably look shit even with only 2 frames of animation, in terms of colour quality.
