It's newgrounds... most people are not talented enough to make their own characters so they use sprites... mario and sonic are just common sprites.

Like you said, Sonic and Mario have been around for a long time, and so has Newgrounds...being 2 of the most famous Video Game characters ever made, people want to make their own variations and creations involving them. Also having Sonic or Mario in the title will probably get them more views.

I doubt that. These characters have become iconic and embedded into minds. Even if they stopped making games for 10 years I still think there would be a random flash now and again.
