What do you, Newgrounds, think is the most sucessful game engine. My pick is the Unreal Engine, or possibly the quake engine. Both took the first steps into full 3D andhad games that set the standards for the modding community. Some might say Source or CryEngine, but my top two are Quake and Unreal Engines.

Without the Quake engine, Source would not exist.

I was gonna say Source too. Hrm, not too many good choices after that...

Two come to mind. The Fire Emblem engine that was used in FE6-8 which were arguably the greatest games handheld ever knew. (every good spin deserves another)

Second would be the Halo 3 engine for online purposes. Have you seen the crazy stuff on the 10 ten Halo Moments series Machinima has been releasing for years? Two years later, this engine is still making people go "0_0" or "HOLY SHEEP SHIT"

The original Unreal did suck, but the original UT was much, much better.

What's your point? You might as well name the first game engine ever made.

I'll say Unreal, I see it often enough in games and the graphics can really be quite good given the right game (such as BioShock). Some games are pretty bad with it though (Legendary).

I am going to have to concur with the majority and say Unreal. I do not know how many of the 360 games I own use it but I would venture that it is close to 50%.

ever since 2004 VALVe has been using it. good graphics, best physics, and best for modding

Source, it looks much better and has better physics and animations than the unreal engine. Plus it is the most mod friendly platform around.

So what? Without Pac-Man, Doom and other games like that, Quake wouldn't of even been made. Why don't we bring up what little fucking engines they had for the most successful game engine, using your broken logic of course.

I'm going to go with Source, just because of how much it encouraged modding. When an engine has well over a hundred mods on it, that's when it's truly successful on a community level.

I'm sick of people saying this.
Who cares?
Its like saying Final Fantasy 7 is not the best game ever because Pong came first.

If he wants to think the Source engine is the best then let him, and stop
trying to shove your opinion down other peoples throats.

Just because.

I'm not very good when it comes to game engines. I'd have to go for the ones I'm certain sure to be good, and they are:

Unreal Engine
Source

Yes. I know they're unoriginal choices, but they're good engines and they work well.

I should mention that the engine's official name is CryEngine, but we know what you are talking about.

While it is true that CryEngine has created a game with graphics beyond compare, it is very closed to modding.

I'd pick Unreal Engine 2 or Quake 3 engine.
Source is a great engine too. Really versatile and modular, many of its features can be seen in Gmod.

Without the Doom engine, Quake would not exist.

Unless I'm getting my wires crossed.

And without the Wolfenstein 3D engine, Doom would not exist. Etc., etc.
