Does anyone here actually buy Blu-Rays? If so, how many have you got?

Currently, I have 63. Latest purchases was 'Gladiator'. Got it for $30 at Big-W today. That's Australian Dollars.

I had a PS3 for a while but it broke because my brother dropped it. We didn't really use it as a Blu-Ray player because Blu-Ray's are pretty much too expensive but we still ended up with like 3 movies.

So basically we have 3 movies.

None, I honestly see no difference... and special features don't mean anything to me.

Why buy a Bluray for $40 new when you can get DVD's with minor differences for $25 (or less)!
I've seen Gladiator for $10, so you paid 3x... Well, I dunno, maybe I am missing something about Bluray that everyone else see's. :P

Can't see the difference? 6x the resolution of DVD, lossless and Uncompressed audio, pop-up menus that don't interrupt the movie? Even low-budget films like Highlander look fantastic on Blu-Ray compared to DVD! The differences aren't 'minor'

But I can see how price can be an issue. I've only payed more $40 for a new Blu-Ray once (The Dark Knight), and that was an error of judgement on my part. However, many Blu-Rays are going relatively cheap. For example, Lethal Weapon 1 & 2 have been going for as low as $16 (Australain Dollars)! In fact, the differences between a new DVD and a new Bluray (of the same movie) is usually only $5-$10.

But if you can't see the difference, then that's fine.

Actually, I owned a Blu-Ray Player (PS3) and an HDTV, and I'm pretty much going to say that the differences are purely aesthetic and that it really doesn't enhance much.

If you have a decent computer, go to Youtube and look around for a high-q HD movie, preferably one where you can turn the HD on and off. Compare it on and off and you'll see about all the difference there is to have with a Blu-Ray vs a DVD player.

Just out of curiosity, what were the three Blu-Rays you bought?

Because of that, I have decided to look into bluray again. I'm going to take the chance to think the one bluray I saw was a one off since it was during the 'dawn of bluray'.

Thanks? xD

If you use Blu-ray on a shitty TV, it doesn't do much. However on an HDTV the differences are very clear. Watchmen and Sin City are tits on Blu-ray.

Is there really that much of a benefit when you have a bluray player and the DVDs for it?

also considering the extra money you have to pay even for old movies that have been out on DVD for a couple of years. sometimes you pay twice as much almost

There is a benefit, but how much depends on your television.

If you have a little portable television, then don't bother; stick with DVDs.
But if you have even a 40" Widescreen HDTV, then I'd say go for it!

Obviously, some Blu-Rays will be better than others, but in 99% of cases, the Blu-Ray version looks much better than the DVD. Hell, many films are remastered specifically to take advantage of Blu-Ray's higher resolution (6x that of DVD), and if you have the right setup, you can also take advantage of either uncompressed (PCM) or lossless (Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD Master Audio) Surround Sound (up to 7.1!).

This thread reminds me of the time my friend was complaining to me that he couldn't see any difference between dvd and blu-ray. I then asked him if his tv was HD and he said no. He then proceeded to tell me what blu-ray movies he was going to buy anyway.

Tl;DR - If you don't have a good tv, don't waste money on blu-ray.

On topic, despite having a lovely big HDTV at my disposal, I do not own any blu-ray movies for lack of a blu-ray player. HDMI upscaling on my dvd player does look fairly lovely, however. But that doesn't really do much for the audio.

This is filler text.

We have Dark Knight and Transformers on BluRay.

Probably the only 2 worth picking up, they cost a bomb though. What me and my dad tend to do is only get the most popular films on BluRay and then the films we don't care about seeing on standard DVD or *gulp* *post removed due to illegal activity* ;)

As far as I'm concerned the main advantage to Bluray over DVD's is the increased capacity for things like Videogames. As far as movies are concerned, the enhanced quality is barely worth the money (to me anyway).

Oh and I just use an DVD player that upgrades the picture quality, it's not Blu-Ray or anything, but an upscale sony DVD player, that makes the pic quality pretty decent.

yeah, like Id pay $1000 more just for a little bit better quality and support sony's new crappy technique too.
seriously, playstation 3 has to install everything because blu-ray is too slow and if it wasnt for blu-ray it wouldnt be so expensive either

I heard that watching Blu-Rays on the PS3 could possibly "ruin" your PS3 with time... is that true?
