Anyhoo, I'd say that the story may be used to explain the circumstances. Well, if we're just showcasing art in a game, at least create a commonplace for it.

I know:

Strangely some people at the art forum all got invitations (an were the only ones) to go to a top research facility to get a tour there. The facility held a special event that randomly chose (###) people to allow to see the tests in action. At the research facility a scientist tests out his new machine in front of the guests but under a strange event the machine malfunctions and ruptures the fabric of reality releasing all the thoughts that the art forum people were thinking of for the game. Now everyone has to team together to save the world from being destroyed by these creations.

How about letting the guy who got an A in creative writing have a go at the story, hm?

In the distant future, creativity was in a decline. The fearful National Endowment for the Arts and Humanities set up a vault to contain any of the rapidly deteriorating creativity.

Hundreds of years later, after the creativity decline was proved to have only been a record breaking burst in the amount of terrible fan fiction and original energy was up to normal, the vault had been forgotten.

However, creativity multiplies exponentially n the presence of itself.

The creativity vault explodes and sends creative energy all over the planet. Many wondrous and confusing things simply appeared out of nowhere, and things living and inanimate began to mutate into things that had once only appeared in the deepest vestiges of the creative mind. Things that could not possibly exist, that defied every law of nature and broke several theories.

Most of these things began to rampage about, multiplying creative energy and making everything much more odd. And worse.

With all civilization in chaos, some have used their creative energies to create good things that have the chance to bring the boredom of peace back to the world.

Meh.

I'm probably out of my mind. Knocking won't make me get to the door any faster.

At this point, perhaps you can make a pretty legit boss character. Complete with minions and a level.
Oh, and while the topic of pushing people as a character is floating about, I want to be a boss in this. Minions, maybe, but I dunno.

As for boss type, perhaps a two-stager. Stage 1: A murderous person. Stage 2: A hideous, enraged monster.

How about, in the distant future the internet becomes a tangible place, one which people opt to travel. There is a place that is traversed by many, The New Grounds. The Hegemon of The New Grounds, whom was sealed off by The Defenders has been unleashed by a foolish man, BMK.
Now, The Hegemon traps a select few henchmen to begin his million year reign or darkness to a head.

BMK has no choice but to go to the lands created by The Hegemon and his henchmen and stop him before everyone in The New Grounds are trapped and The New Grounds are lost forever.

I still think we should have this some form of art forum themed,
perhaps a mix of a dream and the art forum.

Story line.
A NG user 1337ArtistGamer wants to become the best artist on NG. but there are a lot of people ahead of him.
One night as he sleeps he dreams of conquering the art forum.
The dream begins with him going threw different threads (levels) mastering the lingo, gunning down many of the non-artist users who simply place normal comments (our enemies) striving to reach the original poster (boss) of the thread. All the time he is gaining experience and gold which can be spent on skills (design, anatomy etc. ) and art supplies (better pencils, adobe software Wacom tablets etc.) later on.
The user works his way up the top of the Art Forum. until becoming the best artist on NG

This gives all a chance to have our own levels since we all have out own threads, and we all get to be in the game since we who have threads get to be in the game. We can all contribute to the mass pools of ordinary user comments to use as enemies, and we can all contribute to the upgrade and level up icons.
The work is basically already divided this way as well.

I'd like a platformer. Mainly because there are so many damn scrolling shooters - and I really enjoy a good platformer!

The simplest ideas are generally the best. Long and intricate storylines in shooting games seems sort of pointless to me.

No, it's a combination of multiple aspects, the story doesn't have to overwhelm the game on any given level, but if you are usuing it merely for explanation, it should actually explain, in my opinion.

And it was fairly obvious I was talking about games with a premise.

As far as gameplay that would make the game interesting what would make this game special? Would the main character's design change per dream?
Would there be level specific content (armour, powers, weapons etc.)?
How does he transition from each world? Wakes up and goes back to sleep?
Will there be any reference to the stages of sleep?
What kind of weapons will be involved and will there be a weapon enhancing/fusion system?

It's up to me now, turn on the bright lights.

That's a pretty big bullet point, let's save that.

I say yes. Use a similar template, but we can have lots of different artist's versions of the same character.

Only one or two, which would be really cool. Otherwise the rest should be ones used throughout the game, so that the players are familiar with them.

No waking up. He's in a coma?
You know you sometimes have dreams where things radically change without you noticing? Go with that, but with maps.
Lets say the clothes, map and objects gradually slip off the previous world, whilst the the new world object simultaneously slip on.

Sleep walking? Waking up and going for a piss? I dunno.

What kind of weapons will be involved and will there be a weapon enhancing/fusion system?

Kind of bog standard ones, I guess. I prefer shooting games where you choose where the end-game playable character is fat+powerful+sluggish or skinny+fast+shit

I want to put some quick-thinking puzzles in there, and try to stop people from bullet spraying. Would be cool if there was bombs to kill "ground" enemies that you can't kill head on.

Well, the average person has around 3-6 dreams a night, so it'd be neat if the whole game was almost a continuous map that transitioned flawlessly as you progressed. Or like you said, just ripped off and pulled him into the next one.

I'm guessing the level concepts would be decided by the designer? We should probably make a list of types of levels or level concepts so there aren't 9 wet dream stages and one nightmare.

There's micro sleep, REM sleep, stages 1,2,3 and 4, night terrors and nightmares you know? That's what I meant by stages of sleep.

If we follow the typical standards for weapons, I just hope they look pretty.

Will the monsters be all standard and just redrawn by the level designer as well or will each level have it's own monsters?

Last of my barrage of questions: will there be any special/bonus stages? Anything from racking up points to just a stage designed completely differntly to provide payers with a bit of fresh air, like a snowboarding level or something.

It's up to me now, turn on the bright lights.
