To be honest, I'd like to see some gameplay ideas thrown around instead of just creating a bunch of different enemies doing the same thing. Would like to see this game to be a bit more than a generic shooter with goofy enemies.

Also, have we had any luck with finding a programmer?

Oh wow a side scrolling space shooter.....

.... We have a forum full of "artists" and the best your collective minds could come up with for a side shooter was something in space with ships?.....

COME ON DAMNIT! BE CREATIVE! THINK OUTSIDE THE FUCKING BOX!

How about one level in space, IF EVEN!

Try to think of an idea that would incorporate styles and talents of more than just artists who draw spaceships. We have a wide variety of artists here willing to put out stuff, from cartoony ones, to furfags, to figurative people, to landscape artists, speedpainters, fractal guys, crazy abstract patternists, anime freaks, and shitloads more.

If its an ART forum game how bout we focus on the ART forum users and their talents.

I mean shit, even a characters scrolling adventures THROUGH the art forum and its users would be better than a fucking space shooter. Not just ships fly.

Each level could be designed and charactered by a group of artists with somewhat similar styles. This would allow for even those who arent the best artists to have a place (the not so great artist level or something)

I am severly dissapointed in the lot of you that the first thing that came to everyones head was a cliché space shooter....

I loved how you group everyone together, even though the only person who said anything about space was angryglacier.
It's also funny how a lot of the stuff you've mentioned I've already said. You sure you've read the entire thread?

Dude, ok I'll admit, the side scroller is one of the easier genres and doesn't take much aart tallent. but I think the main reason most of us went that route is the fact of maybe 4 or 5 of us can actually animate and even less can contribute to the scripting.
Sure we may seem lazy but were just trying to keep from getting in over our heads.

I wasnt saying everyone had a bad suggestion, was just sad that i saw spaceshooter-esque ideas come up so quick.

Its easier to program and do than other genres true, but that doesn't mean it doesn't take talent. With good artwork and a creative story you can really have a game a cut above the norm, even with basic programing. And honestly we may only have a few people who know how to program and script, and a couple who can animate but that's all we need. You don't need 20 programmers, one good one is enough. And the animators who we do have are also pretty good to boot. If they are supplied with still art I'm sure they can work with the artists to animate it appropriately.

Sure we may seem lazy but were just trying to keep from getting in over our heads.

Great ideas and innovations come when you make ideas way over your head. Shoot for the stars and be happy with how close you get.

Fair enough.

Although, a little late, I change my vote to a multy-platformer with character select, and a large variety of opponents and levels.
I want tons of different weapons, power ups and a level up system.

and no this isn't in sarcasm, I actually like this idea

I think if this game goes well and we have great team work with it. We'll do another one, and that one will most likely be much more complicated.
Even though I agree now that we should have shot for much more, there is still the fact that we are going to be working with people that some of us have never really worked with before. I mean look at how many groups from the power of 3 fell apart.
I think we should think this "simple" game as more or less as a test for our selves at a team. and after we test ourselves then we can churn out something supper bad ass

What if the main character is bored and goes through his attic, finds a magic remote and keeps hitting buttons that set him in other dimensions, trying to find his way back home?

Just a thought, that way each level could be different and still be relevant to the game.

Alright, so I think we should just go ahead and go with the dream idea, it seems like the best way to incorporate several different themes and none of them have to be space shooter levels unless one team wants to go that route.

Next business is finding someone who can actionscript a bitchin' game. I think we all want the works from this; lots of power-ups and secrets and all kinds of bells and whistles, maybe even a leveling system, saved data, high scores, achievements/medals and what not. If anyone knows of a good actionscripter who wants to work on a community project where the proceeds will most likely be given to charity, ask them. I can make a thread in Flash if it's needed, I'll ask a couple of people I know who do AS myself and see what they say.

Level ideas, for unknown speculation. Not in order of encounter.

1- Going down the barrel of a gigantic gun.

2- Inside a Huge Storm, a la that one level in UN Squadron.

3- Up Somebody's Ass. No, really.

4- A Deranged Doodler uses his pencil to draw your foes. Catch up with his initiating instrument and break the graphite.

5- Through a Fireworks Show. Preferable one with massive amounts of fireworks to make it a dodge fest.

6- To the Center of the Earth.

7- Through a tempest of a fleet's anti-interceptor fire, to get to the boss and ram it like a true samurai. After exposing its weak point.

Meh.

I'm probably out of my mind. Knocking won't make me get to the door any faster.

If we were to do a side-scrolling shooter, why not make the view into an isometric view?

Meaning, make the camera look like a beat-em-up, but still retain the shooting gameplay.

Trust me. If I was caught with my computer, I'd be fucked.

Yeh, but if someone COULD do that, then I'd say implement some of the levels with that view.
Also, there should be little FPS segments where you aim at the enemies while the AI moves the character. Or there could be segments like those in Contra, where you aim near the top of the screen as you gun down enemies near the next area.

Trust me. If I was caught with my computer, I'd be fucked.

I dont think that would be very hard at all.... It would be a bit harder to hit your enemies though. But that would be nice, since it allows us to have some more difficulty without just adding tons of enemies.

Story Idea:
Some mad scientist has invented a device where he can enter poeples minds. He manages to tag some important poeple (Obama, Dalai Lama, Paris Hilton, Bill Gates), who he uses to control modern society.

they could also be unknown poeple
paris isnt important, but could be used as a major influence on todays youth?

Our hero gets his hands on a test version of the device. He uses it to enter the posessed persons` minds. In that persons mind he will have to fight the mad scientist`s evil henchmen/robots. he has to defeat them in order to set the person free.
Of course the scene is tinted by the possessed`s mind/imagination...

this means:
+ Some consistency in story and recurring (although differently styled) enemies.
+ We can make fun of celebrities.
+ Similarly styled artists could be grouped to do one persons dreamworld. They can decide who it will be.
+ The best artists in the group can do the bigger enemies, "moderately skilled" artists could do cannon fodder.

thats my thoughts on the matter

I think the key would be to absolutely, positively make sure that that system works for gameplay and works correctly. If a game is made more difficult by the system being broken, then everything's just piss, because the system is the entire base of everything.

I'm not sure if controlling in isometric is the best idea, anyhow. If you're not positioned right, after all, you could miss shots that could prove vital.

Hence why I say "make some levels in isometric, but not all of them". That way, the game won't go to shit due to it being in isometric.

Isometricism is a tricky thing to work out. Not only do you need the specific angles, in a game it would undoubtedly be tricky to program. I think it might be a little too far out of our reach for now. But I like the idea of switching between side-scrolling and top-scrolling levels.

First of all if it's a dream game, it should have a name like Hypnogogia which is the state of sleep right before you fall asleep.

Story:
You are an ordinary person whose been slipping into sleep more and more often at random times (narcolepsy I guess) and you start to fall into other people's dreams too (the bosses of a level could be the boss of the other person's mind) and you've realized that someone is actually linking the dreams together, for -insert a purpose here- and you begin fight this growing evil whose goal is to steal the -something- from the world and rule over it.

It's up to me now, turn on the bright lights.
